Use the HP printer Embedded Web Server (EWS)
to find which cartridges is causing the problem.

I do not have an instant ink printer. My understanding is that if you run out of ink you can use genuine Hewlett Packard cartridges either original or refilled. They must have an HP chip in the cartridge.

I have the same problem. My printer worked perfectly before I replaced the black cartridge with a Instant Ink cartridge. After I replaced it, I got this error "cartridge is not communicating with the printer". The status in HP Smart is "Problem with cartridge or account". Then I replaced the cartridge with another brand new Instant Ink cartridge that I also have received from HP. I got the same error message. What is even more strange is that the page that was produced by the realignment procedure does contain black ink, so the black cartridge itself must work. But the printer doesn't accept it.

Also, when I replaced the cartridge with the (almost empty) black cartridge, it prints as before. So there is nothing wrong with my Instant Ink account.

I can also add that I replaced the black cartridge due to an email that I received from HP that said: "We see that one or more ink cartridges in your HP ENVY Inspire 7220e All-in-One Printer needs replacement. According to our data you still have new HP Instant ink-cartridges from an earlier delivery. Place them now in order to keep on printing with Instant Ink". That is why I replaced the cartridge that was almost empty.
