Common problems for INSTANT INK, HP+ PLANS: INK AND TONER
We would like to share some of the most frequently asked questions about Instant Ink. Check out this link: HP INSTANT INK, HP+ PLANS: INK AND TONER. .

I saw some archived posts asking about instant ink subscriptions when you can't connect to wifi.  I am also in a situation where I am not allowed to have the printer connected to the wifi at work and have it directly connected to the computer.  Connecting it to the hotspot on my phone is not an option because there is no cell signal here and my phone works on wifi calling, so the hotspot does not work.  It is a shame that a consumer cannot manually send updates periodically or select the option for the software in the computer to automatically send updates from the printer info in order to take advantage of the program. Who would not send the updates to ensure timely shipment of ink?

Hi @Dawn9080,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

I'd be glad to help you!

I completely understand how frustrating it must be when the lack of Wi-Fi connectivity prevents you from taking full advantage of the HP Instant Ink subscription program. Unfortunately, the Instant Ink service requires an active internet connection to monitor ink levels, report printer usage, and ensure timely shipments of replacement cartridges.

Why HP Instant Ink Requires Wi-Fi:

Automatic Ink Monitoring:
The HP Instant Ink program relies on the printer being connected to the internet to monitor your ink levels. This ensures that ink cartridges are shipped to you before you run out, without requiring manual input.

Cartridge Validation:
Instant Ink cartridges communicate with HP servers to verify your subscription status and confirm their functionality. Without internet connectivity, the cartridges may stop working, as they cannot receive periodic updates.

Usage Reporting:
HP Instant Ink requires a consistent connection to track the number of pages printed under your subscription plan, which is critical for accurate billing and service.

Why Hotspots Are Not Recommended:

While hotspots may seem like a workaround, they are generally not reliable for Instant Ink because:

  • Hotspot signals can be weak, unstable, or intermittent, especially in areas with poor cell coverage.
  • Instant Ink cartridges require a consistent connection for regular updates and validation. Weak signals can disrupt this process, causing the cartridges to stop working or be flagged as inactive.

For users who cannot connect to Wi-Fi at work, an alternative option may be to:

  • Use standard cartridges instead of Instant Ink subscriptions, which allow you to manually monitor and replace ink.
  • If possible, connect the printer to Wi-Fi periodically (e.g., bring the printer home or connect through a network temporarily) to update Instant Ink data.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance
