My printer has just stopped printing anything in black ink apart from on the ‘Print Quality Diagnostic’ page.  On that particular page, everything that should be printed in black has been printed in black apart from the black colour block (which is still white).  The fact that that page does have so much black printing must mean that neither the black cartridge (which I changed as a precaution) nor the print head is faulty.

 @Somerset4,

Thanks for reaching out to the HP Support community!

  • Do you have the same issue while making a copy?
  • Have you tried printing different documents? Do they have the same issue?

Let's try these steps:

Step 1: Power Reset

  • Make sure this printer is plugged into a direct wall, not a surge protector.
  • Turn the printer on.
  • Wait until the printer is idle and silent before you continue.
  • Remove all of your ink cartridges from the printer and close the door.
  • With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
  • Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
  • Wait at least 60 seconds.
  • Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.
  • Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer.
  • Turn on the printer, if it does not automatically turn on. The printer might go through a warm-up period. The printer lights might flash, and the carriage might move.
  • Wait until the warm-up period finishes and your printer is idle and silent before you proceed.
  • Reinsert the ink cartridges, and then close the ink cartridge access door.
  • Try to print again, if the issue persists, proceed to the next step.

Step 2: Clean Printhead

  • On the printer control panel touch Set Up
  • Go to Tools > Clean Printhead
  • This would print a report once the cleaning is complete.
  • Check if the black color block is present on the report.
  • If not try the second level of cleaning. Perform up to 3 levels of cleaning if necessary.

Step 3: Update the printer firmware

(If you have issues while printing and copying)

  • Refer to this link to update the printer firmware.
