HP Envy 5540
Microsoft Windows 8.1 (32-bit)

Hi,

I have been using the HP Envy 5540 successfully for a few months now, using it wirelessly.

Today, it has just stopped working.

I have ran the Scan Doctor program to see if it could find what was wrong and all it came up with was that it was not my default printer (which I normally have a LaserJet Pro 400 as my default printer), so I changed it to my default printer, then it said I have no paper in the printer.

The printer is full of paper and the printer itself is not saying it is out of paper.

I successfully printed a test page from the Scan Doctor, but it will still not print a pdf document from my laptop (which I think is Windows 8, not sure 32 or 64 bit).

Why would the printer suddenly stop working and is there any way I can get it working again?

I have reset it, by unplugging it and leaving it for a few minutes.  I have also wired it via USB and that still doesn't work.  Any solutions, before I end up having to send it back under its guarantee?

Many thanks, DanaScan Doctor result.png

Greetings @danahemmer

Welcome to HP Forums and Thanks for the post.

I understand that you are unable to print pdf files but are able to print a test page, is that right?

Kudos to you for trying to troubleshoot the issue on your own.

Not to worry, I will be glad to assist you.

Are you using a dual band router?

Have you tried to print from any other application?

Try the procedure suggested in this HP Article

If the issue persists, recommend you follow the procedure mentioned below to uninstall the printer software and settings and install it back.

Uninstall the printer from "programs and features" which can be accessed by doing a right-click on the Windows button (Please have the printer Off and disconnected during uninstallation.)

Check in device manager, if the printer is listed there, please delete it. (Right-click on the Windows button to access device manager)

Go to devices and printers, select any printer listed there and you will get some options on the top.

Click on print server properties.

You will get a popup, click on the drivers tab and delete all the HP printer drivers listed there, if any.

Delete all the instances of your printer listed in devices and printers.

Restart the PC.

Once the PC is on the desktop, press Win + R, it would bring a Run dialog box,

Type %temp% in the run box and click Ok or hit the Enter button.

It would bring up the temporary files folder. Delete the files in the folder (You might not be able to delete all the files).

If possible, delete the printer from the registries using Regedit or using any other 3rd party application.

Restart the PC again.

Download the latest full feature driver from www.hp.com/drivers and install it on the computer.

Connect the printer to your computer only when the setup prompts for the printer.

Let me know if this helped.

Its amazin that this problem has been going on for more than 1 year and HP support still doesn't addres this properly. If you encounter this situation and only from Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel PowerPoint), but you are able to print from other apps (like web pages (Firefox, Chrome), then you need to do the following :

  1. Office looses for the HP printer the correct paper size.
  2. Select Print, go to Printer Properties - Advanced.
  3. Notice the paper size from the drop down list is an incorrect size. For example, I normally use Letter size (11" X 8"). This showed a 6X4 card size.
  4. Select the correct size from the drop down list, in my case Letter.
  5. Click OK - OK - Apply.

Although this appears in Microsoft Office applications as incorrect behaviour, it's actually an HP printer driver issue as I have never encountered this with other printers on the same computer. I have had other older HP models 3 or more years old, and recent printers from other companies (Lexmark, etc.), and never have seen this issue. HP doesn't want to acknowledge this and takes customers on a spin of different steps that don't resolve this. Bad support from HP.
