HP Envy 4524
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hi.  I'm having problems with being able to print colour in Word  (office 365).  There is no box on the print option to change colour.  This has happened before after a Windows 10 update and I can't remember what I did but restoring the drivers for the printer to an older version rings a bell.

Also now double-sided printing only has a manual option to re-feed the paper through - it won't do it automatically.  This bit is new today but the colour bit I've been struggling with for a couple of weeks now.  I've uninstalled and re-installed the printer (more than once) with no joy.  I've gone into the setting and ensure colour print option is ticked.  HP support have been trying to help via twitter but no joy.  Anyone got any ideas?  Thanks in advance.

Hi! @Sah3, Thanks for stopping by the HP Support Forums!

I understand you have issues printing in color from your printer.

Don't worry I'll try to help you out.

Did you make any changes to your printer?

Are you able to make a color copy from your printer?

Have you tried printing with a different ink cartridge?

Have you tried printing from a different application? Does the issue persist?

Replace low or empty ink cartridges on your printer.

Try printing a Print Quality Diagnostic report and check if the printer is printing in color.

Try the steps recommended below.

Click Print,

Select Printer properties,

Select Paper/Quality tab,

Click Advanced,

Select Print Grayscale Off

Click Apply then OK

Clean the ink cartridges
Use an automatic tool to clean the ink cartridges from the printer control panel, then evaluate the results.
   NOTE:
To avoid issues that require cleaning, always turn the printer off with the Power button.
Make sure to load the input tray with plain, white paper.
On the printer control panel, swipe the display to the left, then touch Setup.
Touch Tools, then touch Clean Cartridges.
The printer prints a Print Quality Diagnostic report.
Examine the print quality on the Print Quality Diagnostic report.

If the printhead is badly clogged, it might require another cleaning cycle. If so, wait 30 minutes before you perform both levels of cleaning again.

If the issue still persists try uninstalling and reinstalling the Microsoft office on your PC and check if it works.

Thanks very much for your reply but it's none of those issues.  It prints fine in colour through other applications.  If I save a word document to .pdf it has the box to change to colour if you want but not on Word - it's just not there.  It has the option in power point too.  It's nothing to do with cartridges or the printer itself it's a quirk in the drivers.  I'm sure I had to delete a certain file from the drivers last time but I can't find the post for those instructions.

Thanks again for trying.

@Sah3, Thanks for your quick response and time.

I appriciate your efforts for writing back to us.

As you mentioned you are able to print in color from powerpoint but not from the word.

Try uninstalling the printer drivers from root level on your PC and install the full feature printer software and check if it works.

In Windows, search for and open Programs and Features.

Select your HP printer.

Select Uninstall.

In Windows, search for and open Devices and Printers.

In the Devices and Printers window look for your HP Printer. If you see it listed, right-click on it and choose "Delete" or "Remove Device.”

Open up the run command with the "Windows Key + R" key combo.

Type printui.exe /s and click OK.

Click on Drivers tab.

Look for HP Printer driver. If you see it click on it and click remove at the bottom.

Select OK.

Select Apply and OK on the Print Server Properties windows.

Close Devices and Printers.

Update the full feature printer software using this link: https://hp.care/2B9u4mV

If the issue still persists after installing the drivers it is an issue with the Microsoft word application. Please contact Microsoft support for more assistance.

Hope this works!

Thank you again.   I've tried that already  more than once - to no avail sadly.

@Sah3, Thanks again for your quick response and time.

I appriciate your efforts for writing back to us.

As you mentioned you have tried the steps suggested and the issue still persists.

Try giving permission to your printer and check if it helps.

Turn on file and printer sharing
1. Open Advanced sharing settings by clicking the Start button, and then clicking Control Panel. In the search box, type network, click Network and Sharing Center, and then, in the left pane, click Change advanced sharing settings.
2. Click the chevron to expand the current network profile.
3. If printer sharing is off, under File and printer sharing, select Turn on file and printer sharing, and then click Save changes.  If you're prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

Printer permissions determine which printer properties you can manage, such as renaming or sharing a printer, allowing or removing access to the printer, and determining who can manage documents or properties for the printer. Printer permissions are typically managed by the person who installed the printer or, if the printer is connected to a business or enterprise network, by a system administrator.
1.  Enable the account on the computer that is hosting the shared printer.
2.  Navigate to the location:C:\Windows\System32\Spool folder, grant the Everyone group Read and Execute, Read, and List Folder Contents permissions.
·  To apply permissions to a file or folder
If you need to manually apply permissions to a file or folder, follow the steps below. Manually applying permissions is something that only advanced users should do because you might end up with unintended results.
1.  Right-click the file or folder, and then click Properties.
2.  Click the Security tab, and then click Edit.
3.  Do one of the following:
o    To set permissions for a user that is not listed under Group or user names, click Add, type the name of the user or group, click OK, select the permissions, and then click OK.
o    To change or remove permissions from an existing group or user, click the name of the group or user, select the permissions, and then click OK.
On the client computer, log on as the user and add the printer.

You may also try the following workaround:
1. Open Printers by clicking the Start button, clicking Control Panel, clicking Hardware and Sound, and then clicking Printers.
2. Click Add a printer.
3. In the Add Printer wizard, click Add a local printer.
4. Click Create a new port. Make sure Local Port is selected in the list, and then click Next.
5. In the Port Name dialog box, type \\computer name\printer name, and then click OK.
6. Complete the rest of the wizard, and then click Finish.

Hope this helps!

Thanks I've checked all of this and it's fine.  Its something to do with the drivers I'm sure.  Last time I had to go in and delete part of the driver to take it back to an older version but I can't remember how to do it.  If I find the page again I will definitely be book marking it.  Like I say the printer is set up properly and I can print from other applicatoins in colour but there is no box in the print section to change the colour at all - its jsut disappeared.  Very frustrating!

If the issue still persists after trying out the steps, try using alternate print drivers and check if it helps.

Install a basic print driver over the Internet using Microsoft Windows Update.

  1. Make sure that the USB cable is not connected to the printer. If the USB cable is connected to the printer, disconnect it.

  2. Make sure the computer is connected to the Internet.

  3. Right-click the Start button () in the lower left corner of the screen, click Search, and then type Devices and Printers.

  4. Click Devices and Printers.

  5. Click Add a printer. The Add Printer window opens.

  6. Click The printer that I want isn't listed.

  7. Select Add a local printer or network printer with manual settings, and then click Next.

  8. Select Use an existing port, and then click the Use an existing port drop-down list, select LPT1: (Printer Port). Click Next.

  9. Click the Windows Update button to see the HP Deskjet 5550 print driver. This might take a few minutes.

  10. Under Manufacturer in the Install the printer driver window, click HP.

  11. Under Printers, select HP Deskjet 5550 as the alternate driver for your printer, and then click Next.

  12. In the Printer name text box, the printer's name displays. Click Next. The print driver starts the installation process. When the installation is complete, a message displays on the computer stating that the printer was added successfully.

  13. Click the box to Set as the default printer, and then click Finish.

  14. Connect the USB cable to the printer, and connect the USB cable to the computer. A Device driver software was not successfully installed window opens.

  15. Click Close to close the window.
