Can someone tell me if the HP LaserJet M653x can print a PDF417 barcode, or does it need an add on plug-in font? If it needs the plug in font, what is the part number for that?

I found this document that says the Font Solutions cards for the M653 are not available - so the answer is no.

I do not see any reason why the printer could not print a PDF417 bar code:

The printer will interpret the image as a regular photo, not a line of text that would require a font. As long as the resolution offered by the printer is good enough for your barcode scanner then you should be good to go. There should be no need for extra add ons or plug ins based on what you have provided so far.

We don't send the document as a PDF with embedded barcode image. I need the printer to accept Barcode PCL in an escape sequence.

it looks like the printer might have an extended built in PCL font list

Try printing off the PCL Typeface List from the control panel of the printer. Perhaps you can find the confirmation you are looking for from there.

Otherwise it looks like HP offers a variety of PCL Barcode Fonts that might fill in the gaps:

However, I do not see your model number listed as one of the supported models for this feature.

Yes, I see M651 but not M653. We are looking to see if we can replace our HP M606 Enterprise printer (with the Barcode font card) with the M653 to add color printing. Just need to know if it will support barcode PCL. I guess what I'm looking for is if there is a Barcode extended Font card for the M653x?

It would appear that the quick answer is not natively, as John suggests, you will need a font pack to do this.

I probably need to talk to the HP Sales folks. They should be able to find out if the M653x has a barcode extended font card.
