I have a hp 4100 laserjet printer with a hp jetdirect card J3111a, firmware G.08.49, connected to my network with a RJ45 cable .
My computer recognizes the computer on the network, and I can print to it no problem.
However, when I attempt to access the embedded web server via my network browser, IE, Firefox, and chrome, all I get is a blank screen with a blue border at the top and the left. The Hp logo and the words Hewlett Packard appear at the top left. Clicking on the HP logo takes me to the HP website at www.hp.com.
At the upper right corner is a small box with a question mark in it. Clicking on the question mark brings up a help menu.
Other than this, the screen is blank.
I tried accessing the web server using an older laptop with windows vista. Same thing, but this time system showed 3 smaller windows where java attempted to load. Home and Administration buttons appear on left in blue border.
Top of screen shows green dot and the following message:
[Device is not attached]
"HP JetDirect [Not available:java.security.AccessControlException: access denied ("java.n
Home button displays no data, only red error message: Error: Click for details. When I click for detiails, I get "Application Error" NullPointer Exeception
In the large window in the middle of the screen which reads in part "access denied("java.net socketPermission 192.168.0.xxx.161 connect, resolve.")]
Clicking on the Administration button brings up a window which reads "ClassCastException" wjjava.snmp.SNMPOctStr cannot be cast to wjjava.snmp.SNMPInt.
Tabs display in Blue Border at top of screen. These tabs read Status, Identity, Configuration, security, Diagnostics, Pivacy, and Support. Clicking on the tabs brings up the Java logo, and then a blank screen.
Questions:
Is the card defective?
Is there a problem with software?
Thank you.

It sounds like there is a compatibility issue with Java on the machines you are using to access the EWS. The version of Java running on the JetDirect card is not compatible with what is running on your browsers.
I dont believe there is a work around for that considering how old the 4100 and its Jet Direct cards are. Without a EWS I dont know how you would update teh firmware on the card to support newer technologies.
Since you can still print to the printer perhaps Telnet is still working. If so you could openup a TelNet connection and familliarize youself with the CLI of the Jet Direct card instead. You cant always access all of the features through Telnet but the majority of the key settings should be available.
Otherwise you could try swapping out the JetDirect card if you have another one and see if that one performs better. That would be a sure way to confirm if the current card is bad or not. By comparison you could take the current card and plug it into a different printer and see if the problem follows the card around or not.
