A final thought before you surrender would be to try the USB firmware update on a 2nd PC. See if the same problem persists from a 2nd machine or not.

I had open up the side cover of Color LaserJet 400 M451dn printer and I unplugged all the cables that were attached to the circuit board that has USB connector and Ethernet connector and I waited for five minutes then I plugged all the cables back into the circuit board. I turned on the Printer back on but the message of "Firmware Corrupt, Ready 2 Download". I have the USB cable plugged into both the laptop and the printer and tried power cycle the printer several times and for some reason that the error message has gone then I install this Printer with USB cable to my laptop. As soon as the installation is done, I upload the latest Firmware (Firmware Date: 20150126) and it works. Good Luck. Tony

The 3020 printer that shows up is nothing.
I f you perform an action such as opening the cartridge tray then closing it, then hit the power button, you will get a small amount of churning, though nothing else happens. The 3020 will have been installed.
This is an issue that HP has [almost] totally ignored. In March, 2019, a firmware update was made available. Don't recall any notice ever been sent to anyone. Found it a few weeks ago - they have made it easier to find.
One can only hope that by messing around that one day a power on with bring it back to life. You can try the board replacement. I was ready to install a new print drover and run the installer for FW. On the very day, in the very hour I was sitting down to do this, our power went out long enough that it outlasted the UPS. Yes, I know that a printer should not be connected to a UPS, but this was some salvation after the thing went off some months ago.
Late on the subject. But nothing is late when you have two machines and more that $800.00 in toner.
Happy New Year!
