I have an HP MFP M177fw color laser printer.  I installed what I believe are legit toner cartridges (purchased from Staples) and now like many others keep getting this pop up screen that invites you to click on it to authenticate the cartridges and then says unable to connect to the internet.  A pain in the neck as it keeps popping up.  Per another post on this topic, my printer is connected via a USB cable, so that's not the problem.  Also, my internet connection works fine otherwise.

Can someone from HP or someone who knows what the heck is going on pls post a solution.

Thank you.

Joel H.

You may attempt the following steps:

  • Turn off Display HP Alerts.

If the issue persists then please review the following steps and check if that helps:
  • Open the Devices and Printers folder, right-click the HP printer, and then select Properties.

  • Click the Device Settings tab.

  • In the Installable Options section, set Printer Status Notification to either Enable or Disable.

  • Click OK.

Figure (example) : Enable or disable Printer Status Notifications

The following conditions describe the possible situations that can enable or disable the Printer Status Notification setting in the driver's Device Settings properties.

Hope this information helps. Keep me posted.

Good luck! 🙂

Hello,

I think I already replied to this message.

The printer works fine.  The only problem is the pop up message.

Only recently change is installing the toner cartridges.

No trouble-shooting.

How do I get rid of this pop up message.

@JoelH11435,

It is great to have you back and your patience is greatly appreciated.

I understand that you are looking to disable HP Rewards popup for purchasing genuine cartridges.

I’d love to help!

To disable HP Rewards on computers running on Windows, please follow the procedure mentioned below.

  • Open devices and printers using the control panel.
  • Right-Click on your printer icon in devices and printers.
  • Select printer properties.
  • Select the ports tab.
  • Uncheck the option on the bottom that says 'Enable bidirectional support' and click on the OK button.
  • Restart the computer.

This will stop the computer from any pop-ups regarding HP Rewards.

Let me know how it goes and you have a great day!

Hello The_Fossette,

Thanks for your suggestion below.  I followed your directions, but there was no option that says "Enable bidirectional support" that I could either check or uncheck.  Perhaps this is because I am running Windows XP?  I did poke around the settings and options, but there didn't seem to be anything mentioning bidirectional support.  Under the ports setting the only item checked mentioned a virtual printer port.  Is there some setting in Windows xp I can check or uncheck?

Thanks for your assistance.
