Having troubles getting the printer to automatically switch to tray 2 when tray 1 is out of paper.

A couple of things happened here.

1. The printer I was accessing turned out to be the wrong one. It was actually an M402. So when I would try to fix the settings through remote access, it would change and then do nothing (because wrong printer settings).

2. The sliders in the trays that are supposed to be flush to the paper, were in fact not flush with the paper.

This resulted in a loud knocking noise coming from the printer, and the printer not picking up the paper from the tray.

Thank you for the assistance!

Your tray settings may not match.  The printer will only migrate to another matching paper tray when one is emptied.

Check the specs on your paper trays and match them up on both paper size and paper type.

If you are still having problems after the paper type matches then you may be sending jobs to specific trays in your printing application or print driver.  In that case check out your Printer Properties and adjust them to send jobs to the printer based on the paper type and size instead of a specific paper tray.  The printer will check the specs of the job and send it to the best matching paper tray that it has.  When no paper trays are detected or all matches are empty the printer will prompt the next user to act accordingly.  This is usually where paper tray settings get messed up as many users are not familiar with what the correct settings should be and randomly select something.
