My 401 has three trays: manual (tray 1), letter (tray 2), and legal (tray 3). I have updated drivers and firmware. It is connected via USB to a desktop computer. I have tray 1 setup for #10 envelopes. If I put an envelop into tray 1 and click to print it, a light begins to blink on the console and I have to push the "OK" button for the print to complete. I have tray 2 and 3 set on auto. If I try to set each tray to its specific job, then I have to push the button each time I print.
After much trial and error:
* Which ever tray I set to a specific size requires a button push.
* If I set them all to auto then tray one will need a button push.
* If I set them all to a specific paper size they all need a button push.
Very frustrating situation I have here. Anyone have any ideas becuase I am fresh out.

If the below screenshot is the message you are getting, this is how the product is designed. I used Word - mail merge-envelopes (settings options - auto tray select)
While this document states it is for another product, it also applies to this product. It explains why how you can change you tray setting.
Also, keep in mind if you have tray 1 open, you paper will not pull from tray 2 or 3.

Please try to configure all the trays with correct paper size & type from the printer control panel or EWS Page (web brower access). This step will make printer hardware ready for using required media & it needs to be done only for the first time.
Next step should be selecting/applying the same paper size information in the document properties (page layout for Word). The options to set correct document size might be different for differnt applications, but it is important to set it correct, to ensure that the print jobs is printed correctly.
Now while printing the document (with size defined as mentioned above), using the print window go to printer properties => Paper/Quality tab. Here make selection of Paper Size, Source (Tray 1, 2, Manual feed etc.) and Paper type. You may save this information as a quick set or printing shortcut for quick printing in future.
I hope printing the document as described above should directly make printer to print document without any manual intervention.

Does this same solution fit for trying to print jobs from an as400 print queue? Our older model hp laser 4000 we did not need to designate a paper source on the print job. Just purchased the 401n and am finding it won't auto select the paper tray without pusing the ok button on the printer

as400 print queue is Linux, correct? I am not familiar with this so can not speak to it. However, the above solution is how the product is designed so it is how it will work on windows systems.

We are trying to use the m401n for printing from the IBM iSeries (also know as: as440, IBM i).
We have tray 3 installed. We do NOT want to print anything to the fold out tray (tray 1).
We are able to print sucessfully to Tray 2(Letter/any type (using special forms)) and tray 3 (Any size/ any type).
The problem is the printer aways wants to print to tray 1, eventhough it is empty and folded up. Unless you press OK. Once OK is pressed, the print output is going to the correct tray.
We need it to print without having to press OK for each output. How do we get this to happen?
Is there a way to disable tray 1??

Funny how the HP Laserjet m401 series have printing issues, i have 3 at home, 2 is connected to my network, and one through a USB cable. For some reason or another the USB connected printer is the only one that i can print an envelope on. All of the others, i have to keep tapping "OK", but nothing print on them. Then i decided to just turn on the USB connected printer, and made it as my default printer, now i am printing envelopes with ease. It could be that, this is the only printer, that i do not update anything on it, while the other 2 connected on the networks, are doing updates through the HP website.
I had to share this with others, who are going through the same headache. Also, go into Microsoft word, and choose which way, your envelopes should print. always pick center positioned envelope image, since your envelopes, like #10 will not fit any other way, on tray 1.
