Hi HP Community,

I’m at complete loss as to why my printer will no longer connect wirelessly to my laptop.  I’ve tried everything from removing the printer, installing drivers, etc.  It works fine from my iPhone and iPad but not my laptop with Windows 10.  Also, I recently changed my Internet provider to Rogers Ignite.  The router is about three feet from the printer.

I’d truly appreciate members’ advice to fix this huge problem of connectivity.

Thanks, K

@katydidit You may want to ensure the device and router are using the same channel, 2.4ghz or 5ghz, depending on what the router/printer supports, once done, follow the below steps to set up your printer on a local wireless network with a Windows computer:

Step 1: Prepare for installation

Before setting up the printer on your wireless network, get the network name and password and make sure that the router, printer, and computer are turned on.

  1. Gather the following items:

    • Network name: The network name is the SSID (Service Set Identifier).

    • Network password: The password might also be called the WEP key or WPA security passphrase.

    • A computer connected to your wireless network

    • Internet access: HP recommends broadband Internet access such as cable or DSL for software downloads, using Web Services, and getting printer updates.

  2. Make sure the router and computer are turned on, and that the computer is connected to the same wireless network to which you want to connect the printer. Turn on the printer and place it close to the computer and within range of the router during the setup procedure.

  3. Disconnect any USB or Ethernet cables from the printer.

Step 2: Connect the printer to the network

Use Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS) or an ad hoc connection to set up the printer on your local wireless network.

My router has a WPS button

Connect your printer using WPS

  1. Press the WPS button on your wireless router.

  2. On the printer control panel, press Wireless button , select the Wireless Radio menu, and then confirm that the feature is turned on.

  3. Go back to the main wireless menu, select WPS Setup, and then follow the on-screen instructions to complete the connection.

My router does not have a WPS button

Connect your printer using a peer-to-peer (ad hoc) connection.

  1. On the printer control panel, press the Setup button  to open the menus.

  2. Use the right arrow  or left arrow  button to navigate to Network Config menu, and then press OK.

  3. Use the right arrow  or left arrow  button to navigate to Restore Defaults, and then press OK.

  4. Refresh the computer wireless network connect list, and then select the network name (SSID).

Step 3: Install the printer software

Download and install the full feature software from the HP website. During the guided installation, select Wireless as the connection type.

  1. Turn on the printer.

  2. Disconnect the USB cable from the printer, if necessary. The software installation prompts you to connect the cable if needed.

  3. Go to HP Customer Support - Software and Driver Downloads.

  4. If a Let's identify your product to get started page displays, click Printer, type your printer model number, and then click Submit.

  5. If you need to change the operating system, click Change, select your version, and then click Change.

Hi Riddle,

Thank you very much for your detailed reply.

I’ve done all of what you kindly posted prior to posting here at the Forum.  I even removed all HP software prior to a reinstall.

It appears that this older printer doesn’t like my new high speed router (dual band) because it can’t find the SSID for 2.4 and constantly changes IP addresses.  Printer is never turned off. It goes to sleep and disconnects.

How do I set or get the printer to recognize the 2.4 network/SSID.  Also laptop (Windows 10, updated to 1909) and to the 5G.

I’m not to sure where to begin again.

Thanks, K

@katydidit The pleasure is all mine, here's a few other things that should help us:

  • On the printer, go to Setup > Network config menu > restore defaults
  • Then go back to network > wireless > WPS method > push button
  • Once done, follow the steps mentioned in this link:
    • Click here to connect the printer to the wireless network.

Let me know how that goes,

I'll be here until we resolve this for good.
