None of this works for me. I am getting sick of hp, the last two Hps printers I have purchased (HPp1005 and multufunction cm1312) have given me nothing but trouble on my 64 bit machines.
My HP1005 was working fine but all of a sudden started causing my external USB HDDs not to be recognised. Now the PC won't recognise the printer. Have tried uninstall and reinstall as recommended above and the system STILL says the device when attached to a usb port is unrecognised.
No other printer I have causes this problem. If anyone can advise something I'd be grateful

Found the solution. It is almost same as given by MarcoBeorner earlier.
When I was updating the driver from task manager the online solution didn't worked for me. Instead 'Browse my computer for driver software' worked for me. Here I gave the directory where I installed HP driver (which in my case was C:\hp_P1000_P1500_Full_Solution ). The system got the driver and installed it instantly. Alhamdulillah
Thanx MarcoBeorner

The model number HP Laserjet P1005.
Method 1:
You may refer to the below links and use the troubleshooters. Check if it lists and helps resolve any issues: Open the Printer troubleshooter:
HP LaserJet P1005 Printer - HP Customer Care (United States - English)
Method 2:
You may check if you have the latest drivers installed for the device. You may refer to the below link for getting the latest drivers and check.

Hi, I am also having problems trying to print using the LaserJet P1005 in Windows 7 64-bit Professional on a Dell Optiplex 755 (connected via USB cable).
So far, I have tried uninstalling both basic and full drivers from the HP website under various scenarios (non-administrative and local administrator accounts). All attempts install successfully just fine without any error, but everytime a print job (even the Windows test page) is submitted, all jobs remain stuck in queue and I have to either manually cancel print jobs or reboot the system.
What makes this even more weird is that it was working fine yesterday after Windows completed its setup (this is a brand new SSD where I just installed Windows 7 on) and after installing the full drivers successfully. I highly doubt there is any issue/conflicts between the SSD and printer, but I have even gone to the extreme step of manually going through the registry and deleting all references of HP and P1005 after at least two uninstall attempts. (There are no other HP products involved/connected to the computer other than the printer).
Any thoughts on this?

I work at a College, we bought about 100 of these printers back in 2009 or 2010. Everything works fine with older PC's running Windows XP x86 (32 bit). There is no solution with Windows 7 x64. I worked with an H.P. Engineer. who had no real answers for me. We are pretty savvy tech department, the only solution to the problem is to install the P1102w printer with Windows 7.
