I have this same problem, but I do have the model CE658A. I downloaded the upgrade (20180302) and tried to install twice. Each time I got an error message stating that the installation failed  and that I should try power cycling the printer. I did this but no difference.

My printer runs through a USB port on my SMC Barricade router, using a dedicated IP address (as I recall).

I've tried that several times, and it just doesn't work. My PC just installs another printer driver first (for the USB port), then the firmware update utility shows 2 printers: the newly installed printer (USB port on computer) and the printer on the router (USB port with dedicated tcpip address. I select the program to update the tcpip printer, but then I get the usual crash report.

When I try to update again and select "update all", the USB port printer successfully updates, but the tcpip printer (the one I want and use) fails.  However, when I print a test page, I see that the firmware has successfully updated to 20180301. Now, I can delete that driver and go back my tcpip ported printer since it is the same "physical" printer with the firmware update.

Does this make sense?

@rock-doc

Welcome to HP forums, I see that you are getting issues in installing printer firmware.

  • Where did you download the printer firmware from?

Meanwhile, run Print and scan doctor.

Refer this HP document for the steps to run Print and scan doctor:- Click here

Let me know how it goes.

Cheers.

Hi Sandy,

I downloaded the firmware from:

https://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/selfservice/hp-laserjet-pro-p1102-printer-series/4110394/model/...

I tried the Print Doctor but I got an error message that it could not communicate with the printer even though it found it. I did this with my laptop using wifi. The reason I tried a firmware upgrade yesterday is because I can no longer print anything from my laptop or other wifi devices. I tried the firmware upgrade via my PC, which is hardwired to the router in which my printer is connected.

P.S. Sandy,

Okay, I found the problem with my wifi --somehow the static TCPIP/IP address was changed for the printer.

In an attempt to upgrade the firmware once more, but this time from my PC, I again find that Printer Doctor does not recognize/communicate with my printer when it is connected to my router's USB port. So, trying to emulate the original installation procedure, connecting the printer cable to the PCs USB port, I was able advance; however, all this did was create another printer for me with a USB connection. Printer Doctor does see the other printer with tcpip address as well. Doctor said I needed to install some total package from HP (forgot the name), which it seems to have done on the USB version of printer.

Further attempts to install the firmware upgrade either by my PC or by wifi from my laptop failed. The software does not seem to like something to do with the router address it seems. I turned off my firewall and VPN programs, but that made no difference either.

If there is nothing earth-shaking in the most recent firmware update, I am content to let sleeping dogs lie, now that I have my WIFI working again. But if you have any suggestions, I am willing to try it.

@rock-doc

Thanks for the reply.

I appreciate your time and effort.

Connect the printer to the computer with a USB cable and update the printer firmware.

That should fix the issue.

If this helps, please mark the public post as an accepted solution so that it benefits several others.

Cheers.

sorry, tried that already, and again. Still same error message about installation failing and that I should reboot printer and router and try again.

A slightly different topic--but related to the problems I've been having with this HP 1102w printer. My wife and son have an iPad and an iMac, and they are no longer able to print via wifi on this device. Has something changed with AirPrint to affect this? I cannot see the 1102w listed as an AirPrint-compatible printer, is that correct? Then how were they able to print before?

Hi @rock-doc, I am the Mr.Robot. It looks like you were interacting with @sandytechy20, but he is out of the office today, so I'll take over from here.

I appriciate your efforts for writing back to us.

Are your printer and iMac connected to the same home network?

As you mentioned you still have issues updating the printer firmware and the AirPrint is not working.

I have checked the specifications of your printer is compatible with AirPrint.

Make sure the router can forward Bonjour packets

Not all wireless routers support Bonjour or all of Bonjour's features. Since Bonjour is the default method for discovering printers on a network, make sure your wireless router supports Bonjour, and then turn the Apple device off and on.

Check the specifications or support documentation for your router or contact the router manufacturer to make sure your router supports Bonjour. It must also support forwarding Bonjour packets.

Try updating the MAC and printer firmware to the latest version and check if it helps.

Move the router closer to the printer

Make sure household items do not interfere with the wireless signal, and then move the router closer to the printer.

  1. Move the router away from household items that can interfere with the wireless signal, such as microwave ovens and cordless phones.

  2. Move the printer closer to the wireless router.

  3. Make sure your router is set at 2.4 GHz.

If you are unsure how to check this setting, consult your router documentation or contact your Internet Service Provider (ISP).

Restart all devices, and make sure they are on the same network

Restart the router and printer, check wireless connectivity and status on a Network Configuration page, and then turn on the Apple device to check wireless settings.

  1. Turn off the router, and then turn it on.

Contact the router manufacturer for instructions on how to turn off the router.

    NOTE:

    Do not reset the router.

  2. Turn off the printer, and then turn it on.

  3. Turn off the iOS or iMac device.

  4. Print a Network Configuration page.

Make sure AirPrint is enabled

Open the Embedded Web Server (EWS), and then make sure AirPrint is enabled.

  1. Print a Network Configuration page to obtain the printer IP address needed to view the EWS webpage.

For instructions on printing a Network Configuration page, go to HP Customer Support. Type your printer model, and then type print a configuration page to search for the document.

  2. Find the printer IP address on the Network Configuration page.

Figure : Example of a printer IP address

Example of a printer IP address.
  3. On your iOS device, open an Internet browser.

  4. Type the printer IP address in the browser address bar, and then tap Go.

  5. If a website security certificate displays in the Internet browser, tap Continue.

The EWS information page for the printer opens.

  6. Tap the Settings tab.

  7. Tap Security, and then tap Administrator Settings.

  8. Under Network Settings, select AirPrint, if it is not already selected, and then tap Apply.

  9. Restart the printer.

Try to print.

Let me know if this helps!
