Laserjet Pro M402dn
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

As it always happens, as soon as the extended warranty of my M402dn ran out it started to make strange clicking noises when it is first turned on or printing from tray 3 (the extra tray I bought to add 550 sheet capacity).

It sounds as if the noise is coming from the rear of the printer and I have therefore opened the back door and taken a look around and it seems that all parts are in the correct place, although this is difficult for me to know as I am not a printer engineer by trade.

The noise does not happen every time the printer prints or is turned on.

Hav members any suggestions on what I can try to resolve the issue.

I susgpect that te cost of having the printer serviced (it is just over three years old and has printed c43,000 pages of which c13,000 are duplex) by HP or someone else (if I could find anyone to do it)  will be more than if I just buy a new printer.   I am based in the UK.

Is the printer user servicable for someone who does not normally do that sort of thing for a living?

Confirm the printer is tied to tray 3 by temporarily removing that tray and booting it up a few times.

If the problem is isolated to tray 3 then swap tray3 with a new one.

If the problem persists after tray 3 is removed then continue to use your ears to isolate where the clicking is coming from when you boot it up.  Once you have it isolated to a specific place on the printer then respond back to us with your findings.  We can help you determine if it is something that is easy to fix or not.

Or just drop it off at a computer repair shop and ask for a quote.

Thank you for your reply.

I have removed tray 3 as suggested.  The issue seems to occur even with that tray removed.  I do not have a spare tray 3.

The noise seems to eminate from the rear door of the printer.  I have opened this a couple of times and moved the black plastic hinge type fittings that run across the length of both the back door and the inside of the printer and this seems to alleviate the problem temporarily but after a while it returns.

Due to COVID-19 it is not possible for me to take the printer to a repair shop and in the past when I have asked local repair shops whether they repair/service printers I have been told they do not as it seems cheaper to buy a new one.  This is not very enviromentally friendly but seems to be economically true.

Can anyone suggest anything else I can do to stop this happening.  Are the black plastic flap parts along the back door inside the printer user replaceable and if they are where would I go about obtaining the parts/instructions?
