My new LaserJet M281cdw prints random pages every couple of days with 3 to 4 short lines of characters at the top of each page; normally printing three pages each time.  Oddly, my older Epson XP-810 was behaving similarly.

Although not happy with wasting ink and paper, I do have allot of scratch paper now.

@Barry_in_TX, Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Make sure the printer is connected to a secured network.

Do not use a public/guest network.

Reset the printer

  1. With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
  2. Wait at least 60 seconds.
  3. Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer.
  4. Turn ON the printer, if it does not automatically turn on.
  5. Wait until the printer is idle and silent before you proceed.

Note: HP recommends connecting the printer directly to a wall outlet rather than a surge protector or a power strip.

Update the printer firmware

Click here to know different methods of updating printer firmware.

Restart web services on the printer

On the printer screen, go to setup > Web services > turn Off

Wait for couple of minutes and turn it On again.

If the issue persists, restart the network devices

  1. Turn off the Router, Printer, and the computer/ mobile devices.
  2. Wait for 60 seconds.
  3. Turn on the Router first and wait for all the lights to stabilize.
  4. Turn on the printer and allow it to configure itself.
  5. Turn on the computer/ mobile devices.

Let me know how this goes.

If your Epson did the same thing you can likely rule out the printer as the problem. Some application or computer is sending commands to the printer. Do you know the IP address of the printer?  Your network may be compromised meaning someone other than yourself is printing to the printer. Try changing the IP address of your printer to see if the issue stops.

Do you have a Netgear router with Armour?  I just upgraded to an Orbi and now get those print outside which appear to be caused by their security/vulnerability scan.

Yes, I have a Netgear Orbi router with Armor security; I’ll explore that.
