On my HP MFP M477fdw  how can I set my default to be tray #1.  It always try to pull paper from tray 2 unless I leave the drawer open and then it will pull from tray #1.

Tray #1 is normally the "Manual Feed" tray on HP Laserjets.  This tray is configured to Any Type/Any Size by default.  That means the printer will prefer to use that media instead of the other trays whenever something is loaded.  This is handy for odd jobs like the occasional letterhead or envelope that you may need to print.  Trays 2 and higher are normally reserved for your normal/letter paper.

Review the paper tray settings from the control panel.  Load the corresponding paper into the trays from there or reconfigure the trays as you want them.  The printer will do what you want from there.

if you have more questions then record your printer tray settings by printing out a configuration page from the control panel.  We can suggest what to change to match your expectations from there.

The easiest way to ensure this behavior is to go to control panel>devices and printers and then right click on your printer and select printer properties from the drop down menu. Click on the "preferences" button which will allow you to change the default settings for your print driver. Select paper source as Tray 1 and apply.
