Trying to install printheads new HP 7002.  Printer carriage won’t move

Hi @Marigold2025

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

I understand how worrying it feels when the carriage refuses to budge just as you’re trying to install new printheads. Thank you for already attempting the installation—it helps us focus on the right checks to get the carriage moving smoothly again. Let’s go through this step by step:

Step 1: Power Reset

  1. With the printer turned on, unplug the power cord from the rear.
  2. Disconnect the cord from the wall outlet.
  3. Wait at least 60 seconds.
  4. Plug the cord directly into a wall outlet (avoid surge protectors or extensions).
  5. Reconnect to the printer and press the power button once.
This clears any stalled carriage lock.

Step 2: Check for Obstructions

  • Open the printhead access door.
  • Look carefully inside for packing material, tape, or paper debris that may be blocking the carriage.
  • Remove any obstruction gently, without forcing the carriage.

Step 3: Manually Move the Carriage

  • With the printer powered off and unplugged, gently try sliding the carriage left and right.
  • It should move freely; if it resists, check again for hidden obstructions.
  • Do not force it—just confirm whether it is locked or free.

Step 4: Reinstall Printheads

  • Once the carriage is free, reinstall the printheads:
    • Open the latch, insert the printhead firmly, and close the latch until it clicks.
    • Close the access door and power the printer back on.

Step 5: Update Firmware

  • On the printer control panel, go to Setup > Printer Maintenance > Update the Printer.
  • Firmware updates can improve carriage initialization.
  • You can also update via the HP App on your Windows PC.

If the carriage still does not move after these steps, it usually indicates either a mechanical lock or the printer waiting for a reset. Clearing obstructions and performing a full power reset are the most effective ways to restore movement.
