Color LaserJet Pro MFP M278-M281
Microsoft Windows 10 (32-bit)

My Color LaserJet Pro MFP M278-M281's control panel is continually switching itself off and on even when I'm not printing. I have set my energy settings so it goes off automatically after 1 minute, and "hibernates" after 2 hours. I just ran a software download and unplugged it completely for several minutes to try and reset the system. However, the control panel is still coming on without warning, shutting down after a minute, and several seconds later turning back on. And over and over.

Any pointers on why it might be doing that or ways to fix it? It's been working fine until about a week ago when this started. It's only about a year old if that. Appreciate any suggestions!

@sartoel I suggest we start with a hard reset as recommended by HP standards:

  • Turn the printer on, if it is not already on.
  • Wait until the printer is idle and silent before you continue.
  • With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
  • Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
  • Wait at least 60 seconds.
  • Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.
    • NOTE:
    • HP recommends connecting the printer power cord directly to the wall outlet.
  • Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer.
  • Turn on the printer, if it does not automatically turn on.
  • Wait until the printer is idle and silent before you proceed.

If the issue persists, please upgrade the printer firmware using the steps mentioned here

And let me know how that pans out.

@Riddle_Decipher - many thanks for the suggestions! I've followed the instructions to the letter, am still experiencing the issue. The control panel is still switching back on after a few seconds of going dormant - it's usually coming back on after about 2 seconds, almost every time. Though once in awhile it's more like 12 seconds. But it never stays off once it's gone off, even though we are not sending anything to the printer to print.

I went to update the printer firmware, but it didn't find any to update. Also made sure there was nothing in the printer queue that just hadn't been printed that could somehow be triggering it to come back on.

Any further suggestions are welcome!

@sartoel If none of that helped, I'm afraid this could be a hardware malfunction and I suggest you talk to HP support and discuss your options, follow the below steps to get started:

1) Click on this link - http://www.hp.com/contacthp/

2) Click on Sign-in or select the product using the below step:

3) Enter the serial of your device.

4) Select the country from the drop-down.

5) Click on "Show Options".

Fill the web-form, to populate a case number and phone number for yourself!

Also, if you are having trouble navigating through the above options, it's most likely because the device is out of warranty, if yes? please send me a private message with the region you are contacting us from,
