HP Laserjet 600, three trays
Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit)

My printer will intermittently tell me that Tray 2 is open, when it's not.  At that time I cannot print anything at all, have to reboot and wait for it to initialize, and then can continue.  It will sometimes work for quite a while after that, but sometimes the same thing will happen within a matter of minutes.

Printers check for status alerts via sensors.  There is a sensor to detect when the paper tray doors are open for each tray.  I would guess that your tray is either blocked by crud or defective and needs to be replaced.

If you have warranty remaining then call it into HP.  If not then contact a local printer repair tech for a quote.  For DIY you need access to a HP Service Manual for this printer, then you can lookup and order the parts as needed from there.
