If you want the printer to scan a document as PDF then you must select PDF as the file type before you start.

Look through the scanning options on the control panel.  One of them should be an option for file type.  Adjust this value to say PDF and you shoudl be good to go.

If you are attempting to scan a document as PDF from the HP Scan software on a PC or another 3rd party scanning application then you will ahve to review the options presented in that software.  There should be a setting to select PDF as the default file type.  If not there shouild be an opton to save the file as a different type right after the scan and before it is written to a document on your PC.

Worst case scenario you create the scan as something else and then export it into a PDF document afterwards.
