Greetings,
HP LaserJet 700 Color MFP M775
We bought this used printer a couple of weeks ago and replaced the transfer belt and ink cartridges. Sending jobs across the network or printing jobs internally (menu map, network settings, etc) never worked and simply sat in the queue with a "pending" status until deleted.
Here's what I did to attempt to fix:
- upgraded firmware from version 3 to version 4 > nothing changed
- unplugged and re-started (a few times) > no affect
- tried to reset to factory settings from browser > that failed saying printer was busy
- partial clean from preboot menu > nothing changed
- Format disc from preboot > waited for 99.09.67 error and installed firmware v4 from flash drive. downloaded and installed firmware but now printer is stuck on "initializing" upon startup. I left it overnight just to make sure.
Any ideas?

> So are you saying that the printer will work if I simply remove tray 5 altogether?
Yup. The 775 only comes with 2 standard trays. Trays 3,4 and 5 are all optional add ons and not required for the printer to function. Thus if you remove tray 5 temporarily the printer should still continue to function. It should autoamtically detect that tray 5 has been removed and redetect it when you install the repaired/new one.

If the printer cannot boot when it is disconneted from the network and USB cables then its likely an internal component that is fried. I would jump to a conclusion that the formatter board is bad, which is a costly repair for any technician to complete.
The only other cheap thing to try is a Cold Reset/NVRAM reset. However, if you cannot get teh printer to boot you may not be able to get to the specific screen where these commands are accepted.
I think it might be the best use of your time to send this printer into a shop for a quote. Or if there happens to be any warranty remaining you can try contacting HP and see if they can cover any of the repairs for you.

Thanks John,
The printer does boot up and I can enter the preboot area. What happens is that after doing the disc check, hardware check, etc. it starts the initialization phase and then doesn't stop. it "initializes" forever.
I tried a cold reset, but how do you do a NVRAM reset?

It looks like the M877 does not have a seperate NVRAM reset process like some other models. The Cold Reset is the best you can do with this one.
If the printer can boot, Cold Reset doesnt help, and it is getting stuck on Initializing then some other component is getting stuck. Its hard to say unless we can get the printer to tell us specfiically what compoent is failing after it times out.
Next best step might be to service the printer by bringing it into a Printer Repair Shop and asking for a quote. An HP Certified repair shop woudl have access to the Service Manuals which describe the boot process for that printer. From there they should be able to make an educated guess as to what parts to swap next.

Update:
I tried a cold reset one more time and it worked!
The printer boots up into firmware v4.
The original issue persists. Simply, nothing prints and sits in the queue as "pending".
There are two errors on the machine:
these are the two errors
What are my next steps for troubleshooting?

Glad to hear the Cold Reset got you through one of the issues.
Of the two errors posted, the paper tray one is the easiest. Try loading the requested paper in that tray and see if you can expose more information about the other error. There might be somethign wrong with Tray5. If so then a easy test would be to temporarily remove the tray and see if the printer can boot without it. If it can then swap Tray5 with a new one.
