Hi John,

We were able to confirm that the errors are due to errors with tray 5.  We took the main printer off the base (with the three additional drawers) and after much initializing and clearing of settings, the printer appears to be working fine.  We can copy, scan and print to it across the network.

Tray 5 is missing a small part (lifting gear) and that is why the printer is saying that the tray is "empty" - and I assume also why the other error.  I can confirm that it is only the tray because when swapping trays, tray 4 works in the tray 5 position.   This being said, I am trying to source out a "reasonably priced" tray.  It's truly silly that a 5 cent part renders a whole tray useless and one cannot simply purchase that part, but it appears that is the case.

Is there a way to bypass tray 5 or fool the printer into believing it has paper in it?  Maybe some tape over a sensor or something?  We really don't need tray 5 but do need trays 3 and 4.

Great new, thanks for the confirmation.

Yup, you are on the right trail with this thought.

> Is there a way to bypass tray 5 or fool the printer into believing it has paper in it?

Based on what you have shared so far, I'd say no.  The printer is not able to recognize what is currently your tray 5.  Im guessing that broken part is failing the initialization process for the tray which renders the whole thing useless.  You will need to fix that part as long as you have tray 5 loaded into the printer.  I would just remove tray5 and leave a stack of paper with instructions near by on a sticky note while you service the tray.  Users can be forgiving if you let them know you are working on it, the rest of the printer is fully opperational.

Hi John,

So are you saying that the printer will work if I simply remove tray 5 altogether?

Yup.  The 775 only comes with 2 standard trays.  Trays 3,4 and 5 are all optional add ons and not required for the printer to function.  Thus if you remove tray 5 temporarily the printer should still continue to function.  It should autoamtically detect that tray 5 has been removed and redetect it when you install the repaired/new one.

775 Specs:

Automatic paper sensor | Yes
Paper trays, standard | 2
Paper trays, maximum | 5

Wow,

I can't believe this printer.  Now that I/we got it printing a new error just popped up!

errorerror

Things I have done to attempt to remedy:

  1. confirmed that the issue is not the ethernet cable or the port.  ( I switched both with an adjacent printer).
  2. I took out the jet-direct "card" and made sure all connections were seated and re-installed the card.
  3. pulled power, held down start button and re-plugged it all in

The error comes up and then it attempts to re-start and it becomes a never-ending loop.

Thoughts anyone?

Some suggestions posted here:

https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/LaserJet-Printing/HP-Laserjet-M605N-Printer-Error/td-p/6240282

DZ suggests we check for IP Address conflicts.  Print out a configuration page and confirm the curent IP.  Power down the printer and then attempt to ping that IP.  If somethign responds then track down that device and swap its IP to something else.

You can also try booting the printer without any kind of network connection at all.  Then when the printer is fully booted, plug back in the network and see if an error occurs or not.

More suggestions here:

https://www.orionmarket.com/product_error/13599/HP/HP-M551/81.0x.yy-embedded-jetdirect-error/

This one suggests a bad Jet Direct Card or Formatter board.  All you can do is swap those components if they are bad.

The service manual has this to share about your error message:

81.WX.YZ Embedded Jetdirect Error To continue turn off then on

Description

The product experienced an embedded HP Jetdirect print server critical error.

◦ 81.02.00 (event code): Wireless Networking Event

◦ 81.03.00 (event code): Access Point Wireless Networking Event

◦ 81.04.00 (event code): Jetdirect Inside Networking Event

◦ 81.07.00 (event code): Internal Wireless Networking Event

◦ 81.08.00 (event code): Internal Access Point Wireless Networking Event

◦ 81.09.00 (event code): Internal Jetdirect Inside Networking Event

Recommended action

1. Turn the product off, and then on.

2. Turn the product off, reseat the EIO accessory, and then turn the product on.

3. If the error persists, replace the formatter

So the most consistent response appears to be reseating the JetDirect card and replacing the formatter.
