I recently pulled an old printer out of storage and hooked it up. Works well enough, but when i went to access the JetDirect card, i was unable to view it's web page. It MAY actually not even HAVE one, though i can't find a resource online to determine that. I WAS able to telnet in without any problem, and no passwords. I thought a Firmware upgrade would be indicated here, so i acquired the DLD file, and attempted to FTP into the JD card. The Command Prompt based FTP responded with "Connection Refused". Same result on a web browser FTP attempt. Tried using the HP Download Manager, but it was unable to find it with SNMP, so i tried the Web JetAdmin, which FOUND it... though it errored out when i tried to do the firmware update.
I tried to type ftp-config: 1 in the telnet interface, to no avail... "Illegal Entry, please retry".
If i do a ? in telnet, it doesn't even show FTP-config as an available option. I can't find a resource for any commands for the J3111A.
All i want to do is upgrade the firmware on it. What am i missing? if i could turn on FTP or a webserver, i should be able to move forward.

Hi,
Please follow the steps below to update the latest firmware:
https://support.hp.com/lv-en/document/bpj07429#AbT5
The altrest firmware for your Jetdirect can be downloaded below as suggested by the document:

I used to use download manager to upgrade jet direct cards. Keep in mind upgrading the firmware of this card will not fix the web page issue. The problem with jet direct 600N cards is they use a very old version of Java which no computers have anymore so the page is not able to be viewed. The only way to make changes to the card is by using the menu system of the printer if it has one. If you are trying to change the ip address of the card and the printer does not have a control panel that allows this then the only thing you can do is a cold reset of the printer which will change the method of ip assignment to dhcp or bootp which will find a ip address in your frame. You can then use the hostname of the jetdirect card rather than the ip address to load the printer so even if the address changes the host name will not. Hope some of this helps.

Thank you for your quick response!
I went to the links you provided, but i had already found those and tried them.
As i noted in my original post, i was unable to use step one, as the JDC apparently doesn't have an embedded web page. I was unable to use step two, as it would return an error "refused to connect.". Then i tried step three, "Connection Refused".
i AM able to telnet into the device, with no password, AND i did the hard reset, to no avail.
Any other ideas?

What printer model to you have the card installed? If you do a cold reset of the printer does the network card find a new address using dhcp or bootp? If it does then use that address when using the download manager program as you can enter the ip address of the printer and if the card is communicating it will find it by the address. In other words you use the custom discovery and not automatic discovery. I have probably upgraded over 150 of the 600N cards using this method. Of course if there is an issue with the card then it may not find it or if it does it may error out.
