When troubleshooting physical defects the first thing to do is reset the printer to the defaults from the control panel and then print off a demo page or a calibration/diagnostic page. This eliminates issues from PCs, drivers, servers or anything else outside of the printer.
If the problem persists then the issue is isolated to the cartridges and the laser printing assembly. If the problem goes away when you know something accidentally changed a software or hardware setting and you should be good to go.
To isolate cartridge issues the easiest thing you can do is swap them out with a new one. It is best to use HP originals when troubleshooting but a 2nd 3rd party cartridge should do the trick. Keep in mind that the cartridge estimates are only estimates. Your cartridges may be empty even if the printer thinks they are half full. One way to verify the remaining toner is to physically weigh the cartridge on a kitchen scale. compare the cartridges to eachother and see if there are any descrepencies between what the printer estimates and the actual remaining toner in the cartridge. If you have a bad cartridge then contact your supplier and ask for a refund or replacement.

From the printer control panel, print the PQ quality pages. If they looked washed out as well you are dealing with a physical problem with the printer. If they PQ pages look good then you are dealing with a software issue. Are these OEM or 3rd party cartridges?
