Pulled both plugs and replugged in. everything looks fine except when I select the printer in the app it says preparing but then instantly goes back to No Printer Selected. Previously, I had been doing some scanning and something got stuck. Pulled it out opened the top like you do for a paper jam, closed it and the same thing. I have a green light  and a ready message. Ideas?

Hi  @mkgrandma

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

I understand that after clearing the item that became stuck during scanning, the HP app now shows "Preparing" briefly and then returns to "No Printer Selected." I'll do my best to help you with this .

To better understand the situation, could you kindly confirm the below details :

  • Is the printer connected via Wi-Fi, Ethernet, or USB?
  • Can you try print directly from the printer's control panel (if applicable)?
  • Does scanning from the printer panel work, or is scanning affected as well?
  • Have you noticed any messages or alerts on the printer display after removing the stuck document?

In the meantime, kindly try the below steps and confirm :

  1. Restart the HP app completely and relaunch it.
  2. On your Mac, open System Settings > Printers & Scanners and check whether the printer appears there and shows as Idle/Ready.
  3. If the printer is listed, remove it from Printers & Scanners and then add it again.
  4. Ensure your Mac and printer are connected to the same Wi-Fi network.
  5. If you are using HP App, sign out of the app and then sign back in.
  6. Restart both the printer and the Mac.
  7. If available, run HP Smart Diagnostics within the HP app.
  8. Check the scanner glass and document feeder area carefully to ensure no small piece of paper or debris remains from the earlier scanning activity.

Based on what you described, the printer itself appears to be powering on normally and reporting a Ready status. This suggests the printer hardware may be functioning correctly, while the connection between the HP app and the printer is not completing successfully.

Re-adding the printer and refreshing the HP app connection often helps in situations like this.

I hope this helps.
