Search your machines %temp% folders and search for the HP installation logs.  You can dig through the logs for clues and see what is holding up your printer installation.  Or feel free to attach them to the thread and we can take a look with you.

Otherwise the details here sound like you have a conflicting driver installed on this machine that is interfering or hijacking the printer installation before the Full Software Solution can get to it.   This often happens for me with machines loaded with Universal Print Drivers.  Removing the UPD and rerunning the install usually fixes the problem.

Check your Device Manager when you plug in the printer to the PC.  See what the hardware is registering as and attempt to manually update the driver to the correct one.  All you should have to do is point the hardware wizard to the folder containing all Full Software Solution and the wizard can find what it needs from there.

If this is the issue of Windows 7 USB connection, Print Driver Shown as Scanner. Here is the solution:
1. Search Windows for device manager, and then click Device Manager in the list of results.
2. Click the arrow next to Imaging devices.
3. Right-click HP LJM178M181(NULLSCAN) from the list, and then click Update Driver Software....
4. Click Browse my computer for driver software, click Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer, and then click Next.
5. Select USB Printing Support, and then click Next.
A Windows has successfully updated your driver software message displays.
6. Click Close, and then open Devices and Printers.
The correct printer icon displays.
