Hi,
I have a Pavilion DV6 3108TX with core i7 processor, 6GB RAM, 1GB ATI Graphics, Blu Ray DVD, 1TB 5200rpm SATA Hard drive.
I have intention of swopping the 1TB Hard drive with a 160GB SSD. I won't need the gigantic space of 1TB but i will preferred a speedy and less power consuming SSD.
Where can i perform such upgrade?
What is the cost of such an upgrade?

I did an SSD upgrade on a Toshiba Satellite laptop. I swapped the 500GB SATA with a 64GB OCZ Vertex SSD.
What do you mean by where and what is the cost?
The cost (for a 160GB SSD it is quite expensive) is something that is market driven and the where (if you don't feel comfortable doing it yourself) is either at a PC shop or a knowlegeable friend.
Go to an online store and price the drives. The manufacturers are OCZ, Intel,Corsair, and Kingston. The best ones are OCZ(best warranty in the PC industry) and Intel with the latter being more expensive.. Here is a link to Newegg with those drives. Are you certain you need such a large one in a laptop? I find the 64GB SSD to be a perfect cost to capacity compromise. 160GB SSD= $300-400 64GB SSD = $115 -$400
I can understand why the average user would feel unconfortable with doing an SSD swap. The difference between SSD drives and standard SATA drives is almost like apples and oranges.

Helo,
I read the tutorial placed on the 1st page, but I'm still not sure how can I upgrade my laptop. I have a HP Pavilion dv 1144el and I want to upgrade the memory to a 2x4GB. Right now, I'm quite sure that my system board is compatible with 8GB, but I don't know whether can I swap the current DDR2 memory: Hynix 2x2GB 2Rx8 PC2-6400S-666-12 with a DDR3? The CPU-Z shows me following info about my motherboard:
On the Intel website I found the specification about the Intel® PM45 and there is written i.a.:
-Supports DDR2 (at 667MHz and 800MHz) and DDR3 (at 667MHz, 800MHz and 1066MHz) SDRAM
-8GB max. memory support,
but also:
-256-Mb, 512-Mb, 1Gb and 2-Gb memory technologies supported - I have only 2 slots - the max 8GB is still valid?
and from CPU-Z:
In addition, why my memory works on 400MHz only? I looked on the datasheet too and there is written that it should work on higher frequencies. Does it means that my mainboard has a FSB for memory at 400MHz?
I don't know if I presented my problem clear enough, but in other words: I want to know whether can I put into my laptop DDR3 memory or not, the max. supported frequencies and amount of memory.
Thanks in advance for any help.

Hi,
Your notebook system board will accept only DDR2 memory modules.
If the maximum amount of installed DDR2 is stated to be 8GB then it is 8GB.
What you read at Intel was the reference design information for the chipset.
A notebook manufacturer which chooses to use a particular chipset has options. HP chose to use a DDR2 memory architecture rather than DDR3. The choice could have easily been driven by the market and or economic reasons, just to give a few of the possiblilities.
The speed that your memory runs at was decided by the engineers who coded the BIOS ROM file.
best regards,
erico

Hey, few days ago i upgraded the RAM of my HP 530 from 1 GB to 2 GB. The stick is from Kingston, while the OEM one is of Samsung. My notebook was working very fine..without any issues. But now i am getting 100% CPU usage after running it for a hour or so. So then it becomes simply unusable, even then it has to be shut down manually pressing the power button. So i thought it would be an issue related to malware, so formatted it,installed nothing but office. Even then the issue did not get resolved. Googled a lot, but not getting effective information. I am attaching the CPU Z images..is the bus speed becoming the factor?:smileysurprised:
Besides
Win 7 prof 32 bit (Main OS)
ran OS X 10.5.5 for few days also..

The norm, for compatibility reasons, when upgrading memory modules is to always replace them in pairs and ensure that all installed modules are identical in size, bus speed, configuration (double sided or single sided) and manufacturer.
The smartest choice of modules to upgrade with are major memory manufacturers(Corsair, OCZ, Crucial,Dane and others) who guarantee their modules compatibility with your notebook. (that means the timings and voltages are what will work in your notebook or PC)
If you don't follow the rules of thumb in the previous sentences you risk:
1) a no-boot up scenario. (sometimes with no video display)
2) Blue screens and error messages if Windows attempts to boot up.
If the bus speeds do not match then the BIOS will select the slowest bus speed of the installed memory modules and even then problems like what you are facing will develope eventually.
Sorry to bear bad news but those are the rules of thumb for upgrading memory.
Best regards,
erico

How about giving your HP notebook product name/number?
The screenshots are nice but say very little about which specific model you own. That is the information that I need to answer you question.

erico
