I recently purchased the HP9730e printer.  My old printer could print on Avery label pages using the Avery Design & Print software.  I can't print to labels now using the new printer.  The printer says the paper is too small and cancels the print job.  If I put in a plain piece of paper it prints without errors.  Is the printer somehow scanning the label page and seeing the edge of the labels and thinking the paper is too small?  How to fix this?  I did download and install the latest firmware.  Wierd issue and can't figure this out.  TYIA

There is perhaps nothing radically different about the way the printer interprets supported paper when reading that paper for printing labels.  Am I positive about that?  No -- the guess is based on my experience and not anything definitive about your printer model.

Paper sizes and types are managed by the printer control panel or using the Embedded Web Server (EWS).

Sizes and types are managed by Tray --

That just means that Tray 1 might not support the same paper sizes and types as does Tray 2 and the settings reflect the differences.

Printer - Media sizes supported
Letter; Legal; Government Legal; Executive; Statement; 3 x 5 in; 4 x 6 in; 4 x 12 in; 5 x 5  in; 5 x 7 in; 8 x 10 in; L; Photo 2L; Envelope( #10, Monarch); Card (3 x 5 in, 4 x 6 in, 5 x 8 in); Tabloid(11x17 in)

That said, there are a great many Avery label paper products that vary in type, size, and weight.

Standard labels - one sided, standard size (Letter / A4), non-glossy print surface might print as "plain paper".

There are even more numerous Label templates than there are paper products.  These are primarily of interest if you are creating / finishing your project locally (on your system).

If the labels are glossy and / or thicker than standard or premium paper, then perhaps select paper type "Plain Paper, Thick", or Brochure matte or glossy.

EWS – Tray and Paper Management

Open your Browser > Type / enter the Printer IP address into URL / Address bar

Section Paper > Trays > click on Tray to configure

Next  (in addition and as available)

Section Print > Default Print Options > Select default tray

EWS_9135_Print_Default_Print_Options_4EWS_9135_Print_Default_Print_Options_4

What else?

I've not had to use the online Avery Design and Print --

Years back I downloaded a copy of the Desktop software (perhaps no longer available from Avery).

It is likely the online software works in essentially the same way though there might be upgrades or differences by now.

That said, if the online software will let you export your completed label template to a local PDF file, you can try printing that file.

Example - Avery Labels - Windows - Adobe Reader - Print PDF File
