OfficeJet 8100
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I have spent several hours today trying to set up my wife's OfficeJet 8100 to let me print from my mobile phone and tablet using ePrint services. When I started, web services on the printer were enabled, but attempts to print out the page with the claim code to let me set up the printer consistently failed, and eventually I was locked out for an hour.

I trawled through various forum posts to look for a solution; one approach which was suggested was to disable web services and re-enable them using the embedded web server. I duly disabled web services, but when I tried to re-enable web services found that *that* consistently failed! A further trawl for solutions to that problem found a suggestion that I do a factory reset, but the user documentation and forum posts don't admit to the possibility of doing a factory reset on this printer - the solutions which are suggested assume a printer with a much more comprehensive display and control panel than the OfficeJet 8100.

The printer is connected via wired ethernet, and retrieves its IP address from a DHCP server, which I have set up to provide a fixed address for the printer's MAC address (as is the case for all the other devices on my home network). Printing from devices connected to the wired network (including laptops which access the network via a wireless access point) works fine - it's only trying to use HP ePrint services which causes the grief.

Is there a way out of this problem, please, or should I give up?

Hi @RainKap,

Welcome to HP Forums,

this is a great place to get support, find answers and tips,

Thank you for posting your query, I'll be more than glad to help you out 🙂

I understand you are having trouble while accessing the web-services. Don't worry as I have a few steps which should help to resolve the issue.

Please follow the link to setup the Web service, using this link.

How to Enable HP Web Services and Configure HP ePrint - Click here

Next thing I would suggest to follow these steps

1. Obtain your printer's IP address

a. This can be done by pressing the wireless icon on printer.

2. Enter the printer's IP address in a browser.

3. Select the network tab at the top of the page.

4. On the left select networking.

5. Select Network Address (IP)

6. Select Manual DNS Server

a. Manual Preferred DNS should read 8.8.8.8

b. Alternate DNS Server should read. 8.8.4.4

7. Select apply you might get a warning just select okay.

Let me know if those steps worked for you.

If they did, that's awesome!

Give us some reinforcement by clicking the solution and kudos buttons,

that'll help us and others see that we've got the answers!

Good Luck

Hi, @Biswajeet

Thanks for posting the recipe. I tried following it, using the steps in the order you posted them. The results were:

1. The link to http://support.hp.com/in-en/document/c03721293 led me to the same web page that I used when I was trying on 6 December to set up eprint. I tried setting up web services, which are disabled, with exactly the same result as before: when I selected the "Web services" tab and started the "Setup" procedure, I clicked to accept the terms of use and enable web services, then clicked on "Next".  For about 2 seconds, a progress indicator showed (blue dots moving across), then the window changed to an error message:

"Web Services is not enabled.

To try setting up Web Services again, click the Retry button below

"

Clicking on the "Retry" button produced the same effect as the original attempt.

gives instructions for setting up web services on a Mac; I have been trying to set up web services from my wife's PC, running Windows 10, and (today) from my own PC, running Linux Mint 18, so these instructions are irrelevant.

3. I *know* my printer's IP address; I run a DHCP server on a spare PC, which allocates fixed leases to all the devices on my home network, and maps each of these IP addresses to a hostname. I was able to connect to the printer using both the hostname and the IP address which I set up in my DHCP server.

I did some intelligent interpretation of sub-steps 4 & 5 (under "Wired (802.3)" I selected "IPv4") and set up to use a Manual DNS server, with 8.8.8.8 as the preferred DNS server address and 8.8.4.4 as the alternate DNS server address.

The net effect of this was that I could no longer connect to the printer using its hostname, but only by using the IP address 192.168.17.15. An attempt to enable web services gave me a different error message, that I had tried too often to enable web services and I would have to wait for an hour before trying again 😞 I also noticed that attempts to access other devices on my home network using their hostnames failed, so I decided to revert to using an automatic DNS server. Printing to the Officejet 8100 using the wired network from my wife's Windows 10 PC, my Linux Mint 18 PC and my Windows 7 PC works - each is set up to refer to the Officejet 8100 by its hostname, ooloncolluphid, rather than by its IP address, 192.168.17.15.

I'm afraid I am no further forward than when I posted my original question. Thank you for trying...

Hi Ian,

Did you get anywhere with this? I have exactly the same problem. I've tried the 8.8.8.8 solution and every variation of it with no success.
