HP LaserJet MFP M236dw Printer
iOS

When printing from iPhone/iPad, it always shows the paper type as Letter (and no other options).  But going to the printer settings, the default paper type is already set as A4.  How can I correct this issue to let the air print paper type to show A4 as I'm always using A4 paper size?  Thanks.

Here is my device information:

iPhone / iPad iOS version: 18.0.1

Printer Name: HP LaserJet MFP M236dw (FD5498)

Printer Firmware Version: 2023-10-16

Hi @SunnySuen

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It seems like your iPhone or iPad is defaulting to the U.S. standard paper size (Letter) when printing via AirPrint, despite the printer's settings being configured for A4. Here are a few steps you can try to resolve this issue:

Check Printer Settings on iPhone/iPad:

  • Open the print dialog on your iPhone or iPad and ensure that the paper size is set to A4. Although AirPrint doesn’t provide many paper size options directly, sometimes apps like Pages or Safari may let you choose the correct size before printing.

Ensure Regional Settings are Set to A4:

  • Go to Settings on your iPhone/iPad > General > Language & Region.
  • Set your region to a country that uses A4 as the default paper size (e.g., UK, India, or Australia) if it’s not already set.

Check for Firmware Updates:

  • While your printer's firmware is relatively recent (2023-10-16), ensure there are no additional updates available by checking HP’s support page for the MFP M236dw.

Reset the Printer Defaults:

  • You can try resetting the printer’s network settings and reconnecting your devices. Sometimes the AirPrint defaults may refresh after a reset. On the printer control panel, navigate to Setup > Service > Restore Defaults.

Re-add the Printer to iOS Devices:

  • Forget the printer from your iPhone/iPad's AirPrint list and re-add it. This can sometimes refresh the settings. Go to Settings > Wi-Fi > tap the information icon (i) next to the printer, and select "Forget This Network." Then reconnect to the printer.

Check Print Server Settings:

  • If you are using a print server, the server’s default paper settings could override your personal device's settings. Verify the print server’s configuration to ensure it’s set to A4.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
