I am trying to print some holiday snaps on 10x15 cm HP paper. When printing from a Mac using OS 15.0.1 the printer refuses to take paper from the photo tray and prints on A4, despite selective the paper size and photo tray.
when I print from an iPad all is OK, but the printer refuses to quality is bad, with low contrast and a milky film on the prints. Getting no help from “Technical Support” who are useless

Hi @Bowlinebill,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds like you're facing a couple of issues with your HP ENVY 5640 printer. Let's tackle each one.
Printer Refusing to Print from Photo Tray
Since your printer is not pulling from the photo tray when printing from your Mac, here are some steps to troubleshoot:
Check Printer Settings:
- Open the print dialog on your Mac (File > Print).
- Make sure to select the correct paper size (10x15 cm) and choose the photo tray as the source.
Set the Default Paper Size:
- Go to System Preferences > Printers & Scanners.
- Select your printer, then click on Options & Supplies.
- In the General tab, ensure the default paper size is set to 10x15 cm.
Update Printer Drivers:
- Make sure you have the latest printer drivers installed. Visit the HP support website to download and install the latest version for your printer model.
Reset the Printer:
- Turn off the printer, unplug it for a minute, then plug it back in and turn it on again. This can sometimes resolve connectivity issues.
Low Quality Prints
For the issue with print quality (low contrast, milky film), try the following:
Check Ink Levels:
- Ensure that all ink cartridges are sufficiently filled. Low ink levels can affect print quality.
Print Quality Settings:
- In the print dialog, check the Quality settings. Make sure it is set to Best or High Quality rather than Draft.
Run Printhead Cleaning:
- Access the printer's maintenance menu from the printer's control panel and run a printhead cleaning cycle.
Use Quality Paper:
- Make sure you are using genuine HP photo paper, as other brands may not yield the same results.

Print from iPad Quality Issues
If printing from your iPad yields low-quality results, consider:
Use AirPrint:
- Make sure you are using AirPrint for better compatibility with your printer.
- In the print dialog, ensure the settings are adjusted for photo quality.
Check for iOS Updates:
- Make sure your iPad is running the latest iOS version, as updates may improve compatibility with printers.
If Issues Persist
If you've tried all of the above and the problems still exist, consider the following:
Reinstall the Printer:
- Remove the printer from your Mac's printer list, then add it back again. This can reset any misconfigurations.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
