Hey there! @Wooders, Thanks for stopping by the HP Support Forums!

I understand you are getting cartridges installed incorrectly error on your printer.

Don't worry I'll try to help you out.

Did you make any changes to your printer?

Have you tried checking with a different ink cartridge?

As you mentioned you are getting cartridges installed incorrectly error on your printer.

Try the steps recommended below.

The printer might display an error if the ink cartridges are not correctly installed. Remove the ink cartridges, check them for any plastic tape, reinstall the ink cartridges, and then try to print again.

  note:

HP cannot guarantee the quality of remanufactured or refilled ink cartridges. Use genuine HP ink cartridges for good print quality.

  1. If the printer is off, press the Power button to turn on the printer.

  2. Open the exterior door.

  3. Open the ink cartridge access door.

The carriage moves to the center of the printer. Wait until the carriage is idle and silent before continuing.

  4. Press down on the ink cartridge to release it, and then pull the ink cartridge out to remove it from its slot.

Figure : Remove the ink cartridge

      caution:

Do not touch the copper-colored contacts or the ink nozzles. Touching these parts can result in clogs, ink failure, and bad electrical connections.

  5. Remove any protective tape that still might be on the nozzles.

      caution:

Do not try to remove the copper electrical strip.

  6. Hold the ink cartridge by its sides with the nozzles toward the printer, and then insert the ink cartridge into its slot. Make sure that the ink cartridge is inserted in the correct slot.

    • The tri-color ink cartridge () goes in the slot on the left.

    • The black ink cartridge () goes in the slot on the right.

Figure : Reinsert the ink cartridge

  7. Push the ink cartridge forward into its slot until it snaps into place.

  8. Repeat these steps to replace the other ink cartridge, if necessary.

  9. Close the ink cartridge access door.

Hi,

Really appreciate the time taken to reply to my post.

In response, I havent changed anything on the printer at all...just tried it one day and it wasnt working.  As suggested, I tried everything in your note to no avail other than to go out and buy a new cartridge.  Im a little reluctant to do the latter at this stage as I have a monthly subscription with HP supposedly to cover the costs of replacement ink cartridges (HP Instant Ink) so at this stage im a little reluctant to shell out any additional funds to purchase outside this scheme.....  any other suggestions gratefully received!

Wooders, I'm wondering if you ever received a satisfactory response to your inquiry.  I've had the exact same problem happen today.  I did nothing to the printer.  It worked two days ago: today, error message--same as yours.  I went through all the general troubleshooting steps AND replaced the print cartridge.  The printer recognized the new cartridge and started the head alignment procedure but stalled once again with the "print cartridge installed incorrectly" error.

Curious whether HP Support was able to offer you anything other than new ink cartridges...

I'm having the same problem! Did you get anywhere with this?

I haven't heard a thing out of anyone, Wendy70.  I'd hoped someone else would post on the issue.  It doesn't appear that the original poster was offered anything other than new cartridges, which will not help under the circumstances.  Frustrating!

Cartridge error installation error started appearing approximately 2 yrs after initial purchase. I am enrolled in automatic monthly cartridge refill program. I have only installed hp cartridges provided by hp. The error message first starting appearing on only the black and white cartridge. I read where you can print with just the color cartridge so I removed the black and white cartridge and started printing in a one cartridge mode. That worked fine for about 6 mos and now I am getting the cartridge incorrectly installed error message back using just the color cartridge. I have been able to restart and reinstall the cartridge several times and printer does work temporarily, but error message inevitably seems to keep recurring.

I don't believe that installing a new cartridge will solve the problem. There appears to be some kind of glitch in the error message communication?
