Printer will not change default paper trays, stuck on tray one. Printer asks for PIN number to log on to my HP web page but nowhere in the setup did it ask for a PIN number to be installed.

Not much information on changing paper tray default settings online or in the manual. I swore off HP when I had my last HP 2550 10 years ago.. I print envelopes and checks and I bought it for the 2 paper trays but I'm not very happy at this point..

If I can't find an easy way to change default paper trays this one is going back... Thanks...

As I understand you need help in changing default paper trays on HP 8740,

Don't worry as I'll be glad to help, however, to provide an accurate resolution, I need a few more details:

Which tray have you been using the print the envelopes and cheques?

Have you looked up your user guide for the details you need?

While I await your reply, here's what you need to know:

By default, the printer draws paper from Tray 1.

If Tray 1 is empty and Tray 2 is installed and contains paper, the printer draws paper from Tray 2.

You can change the behaviors using the following features:

● Default Tray: Set the default tray from which the printer draws paper first when the paper of the same size is loaded in both Tray 1 and Tray 2.

● Tray Lock: Lock a tray to prevent it from accidental use; for example, when you have loaded special paper (such as letterhead or preprinted paper).

The printer will not use a locked tray even when the other tray is empty.

NOTE: For a better experience, load only one type of paper in a tray.

NOTE: Tray 2 supports only plain paper.

I have the 8720 with just one tray but it shows 2:  tray 1: default and tray 1: 4x6 photo paper.  I've tried to restore to factory settings but noting is working.  HP utility doesn't seem tohave a way to fix it either.
