HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M283fdw
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

My LaserJet Pro MFP M283fdw simply refuses to stay online.  The most common occurrence is that I try to print a PDF or Word document via our home WiFi network.  The HP Smart app shows the printer as ready.  I attempt to print.  The system makes a "critical stop" noise and says the printer is offline.  The print fails (sometimes it just stops in its tracks, other times the print spool reports an error).  Then the HP Smart app suddenly shows the printer as offline.

The printer's own display shows it online on the correct network.  The computer shows it working fine UNTIL I TRY TO PRINT.  Then it goes "offline."

Occasionally a restart of the printer or computer fixes the problem, but more often I restart EVERYTHING, and eventually give up and try another day.  It's exasperating.

Things I've tried:

  • HP Smart diagnostic says it can't diagnose or resolve the issue.
  • Restarting the computer doesn't work.
  • Resetting the printer wifi doesn't work.
  • Powercycling the modem/wifi doesn't work.
  • Power cycling the printer doesn't work.
  • HP Print and Scan Doctor wants to update itself, but the update fails.
  • The current version of Print and Scan Doctor (5.7.1) gets to "communicating with the printer" and hangs permanently.
  • It installed new firmware recently, and that seemed to make the problem worse, not better.
  • I've also reinstalled the print drivers (HUGE headache, install failed a couple of times).

Suggestions and/or advice welcome.  Thanks, all.
