Same problem here. Used to work fine but now when I try to print from my iPhone it changes from a colour picture to black and white. Really annoying. Printer firmware is up to date. Printing from pc works fine - ie it prints in colour. No options to change to colour. Happens with iPhone 8 and 6s on latest os.

@Dom17373626,

Thank you for reaching out to the HP Support community!

  • Are you using the AirPrint feature from the iPhone to print or are you using the HP Smart App?

If you are using the AirPrint feature,

  • Open the image that you would like to print
  • Tap on the share icon to go to the print preview
  • Under options make sure the 'Black and White' option is disabled.

If you are using the HP Smart App, follow the steps below:

  • Open the HP Smart App
  • Click on the Print Photos tile
  • Select the photo you would like to print
  • Click below the printer name to select the presets as shown in the image below.

  • Click on color/quality and color options
  • Make sure color is selected

  • Try to print again

If the issue persists, try updating your iPhone's OS. Refer to this link.

Thank you for your reply.

  • Are you using the AirPrint feature from the iPhone to print or are you using the HP Smart App?

>> I have tried from both and get the same failure.

From AirPrint I do not get the 'black and white' option you have on your screen shot.

From the HP Smart App, again I do not get the options you have on your screen shot.

If the issue persists, try updating your iPhone's OS. Refer to this link.

>> The issue remains. My iPhone OS is the latest ( 12.3.1 ).

Let me know if this information helps or if you need any further assistance.

>> Its reassuring to know someone is looking at this but regrettably still outstanding for me.

I can confirm that I used to be able to print in colour from my iPhones.

Also, the printer firmware is up to date - I've checked via the HP Smart app on the phone.

I am able to print in colour from PC.

You originally estimated an update would be available in 72 hours. It's been more that 168 now and I'm still waiting for an update. Have you investigated / replicated the fault?

Sorry for the delay in response.

First, remove the HP Smart App.

Restart the iPhone and install the HP Smart app again.

  1. Turn on the printer and make sure ink cartridges are installed and paper is loaded in the tray.

  2. On the Apple device, open Settings, tap Wi-Fi and then tap the printer with DIRECT in the name (Example: DIRECT-72-HP Officejet Pro 6970) from the list of available networks.

  3. If prompted for a password, type 12345678. This is the default password to log in.

If you created a custom password and do not remember it, go to your printer to get the password. The method to find the password depends on your printer model.

Printers with a control panel display

    • Touch the Wi-Fi Direct icon  or navigate to the Wi-Fi Direct menu.

    • Go to the Reports menu, and then select Network Summary or Network config. to print a network summary page. Find the Wi-Fi Direct password in the Wi-Fi Direct section.

    Printers with buttons only

    • Press the Information button  to print a report with Wi-Fi Direct information. Find the Wi-Fi Direct password in the Wi-Fi Direct section of the printed page.

    • Press and hold the Wi-Fi Direct button  for 3 seconds. Find the Wi-Fi Direct password in the Wi-Fi Direct section of the printed page.

    • Press the Wireless  and Information buttons  at the same time. Find the Wi-Fi Direct password in the Wi-Fi Direct section of the printed page.

    • Press and hold the Resume/Cancel  or Resume button  for 2-3 seconds to print an information page. Find the Wi-Fi Direct password in the Wi-Fi Direct section of the printed page.

    • Press and hold the Resume/Cancel  or Resume button  for 10 seconds to print an information page. Find the Wi-Fi Direct password in the Wi-Fi Direct section of the printed page.

  4. Open the item you want to print, and then tap Print from the app or action menu.

  5. Select your printer from the list of available printers, and then tap Print.

  6. Reconnect to your local Wi-Fi network after the print job completes.

See if you get to print in color after connecting the printer through WiFi Direct.

Keep me posted for further assistance.

Hello,

I am having the same issue. I have followed the above steps and still cannot print in color. Any additional advice?

HP Recommended

Turned out that the print preview image on the phone was black and white but the actual printout was in colour.

Thanks. I will try that when I get back home. I have been afraid to waste my limited number of Instant Ink pages on non-colored charts. 😂
