My printer is not responding to print requests. The error message states that the paper tray is not closed. I've tried looking for a jam, opening and closing the tray, changing out the paper, turning it off and then back on after a while, uninstalling and re-installing, and continue to get the same result. Does anyone have another suggestion?

Hi @Linda7449,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds like you've tried a lot of troubleshooting steps already! If the paper tray error persists despite those efforts, there are a few more things you can try.
- Reset the printer: Sometimes, a simple reset can resolve various issues. Unplug the printer from power, wait for a minute or so, and then plug it back in.
- Check for firmware updates: Ensure your printer has the latest firmware installed. Sometimes, updates can fix bugs or glitches causing errors.
- Inspect for foreign objects: Even if you've checked for paper jams, there might be small bits of paper or debris stuck in the printer's mechanisms. Use a flashlight to thoroughly inspect the printer's interior.
- Verify paper tray alignment: Make sure the paper tray is properly aligned and inserted into the printer. Sometimes, misalignment can trigger false error messages.
- Try a different paper tray (if available): If your printer has multiple paper trays, try using a different tray to see if the error persists.
Hopefully, one of these suggestions will help resolve the issue with your HP ENVY 5540 printer!
Take care and have a good day.
