I am able to AirPrint from my Mac Laptop to my HP 5740 no problem, but when I print from my phone the printout always gets garbled before it finishes. Since I can print from my laptop I know the wireless connection is set up properly. My husband has an iPhone 11 and can airprint fine but my iPhone 14. Can my newer phone not communicate properly with my 8 year old printer?

Hi @helenewallace,
Welcome to the HP Support Community.
I'd be glad to help you!
If your HP 5740 printer is printing garbled text when printing from your iPhone 14 using AirPrint, but works fine from your laptop, the issue is likely related to the iPhone's connection or settings. Here's how to troubleshoot and resolve this problem:
1. Restart Devices
- Restart Your iPhone: Power off your iPhone 14, wait a few seconds, and then turn it back on.
- Restart Your Printer: Turn off your HP 5740 printer, wait for about 10 seconds, and then turn it back on.
- Restart Your Wi-Fi Router: Power cycle your router to ensure a fresh network connection.
2. Update Firmware and Software
- Update iPhone: Make sure your iPhone 14 is running the latest version of iOS.
- Go to Settings > General > Software Update.
- Update Printer Firmware: Check if your HP 5740 has the latest firmware installed.
- Go to the HP Support website, search for your printer model, and download any available firmware updates.
- Update Printer App: If you're using any HP apps on your iPhone, update them to the latest version via the App Store.
3. Check AirPrint Settings
- Ensure that you are using AirPrint on your iPhone and not any other third-party printing app.
- Verify that the correct printer is selected in the AirPrint menu when printing from your iPhone.
4. Reset Network Settings on iPhone
Resetting network settings on your iPhone can resolve connectivity issues:
- Go to Settings > General > Reset.
- Tap Reset Network Settings.
- Reconnect your iPhone to your Wi-Fi network and try printing again.
5. Change Print Settings
Sometimes specific settings can cause printing issues:
- When selecting the print option on your iPhone, choose the correct paper size and quality.
- Avoid any advanced settings that might be set differently from your laptop, which could cause the garbled text.
Please find the remaining steps in the next post.
Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance

Hi @helenewallace,
Please find the remaining steps below.
6. Test with Different Documents
- Try printing different types of documents or photos to see if the issue persists.
- This can help identify if the problem is specific to certain types of content (like PDFs or web pages).
7. Re-add the Printer on iPhone
Removing and re-adding the printer on your iPhone can sometimes clear up configuration issues:
- Go to Settings > Wi-Fi on your iPhone.
- Forget your current Wi-Fi network and reconnect.
- Try to print something new using AirPrint and re-add your printer.
8. Check Printer Configuration
Ensure that your HP 5740 printer is not set to any special mode that could cause garbled prints, such as:
- Draft Mode: Make sure it's set to normal or best quality.
- Paper Size and Type: Ensure these match what you are using from your iPhone.
9. Reset the Printer
If none of the above steps work, resetting your printer may help:
- Disconnect the power cord from the printer while it is on.
- Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
- Wait 60 seconds, plug the power cord back into the wall outlet, and reconnect the power cord to the printer.
- Turn on the printer and try printing from your iPhone again.
These steps should help resolve the garbled printing issue from your iPhone 14 to your HP 5740 printer. If the issue persists, this could be a compatible issue with the current OS version.
