HP 8600
Microsoft Windows 8.1 (64-bit)

Hello. I'm having difficulty with my HP 8600 not pulling from the correct tray. It is a recent problem as all was functioning properly until a few days ago. I have a two tray accessory, with tray #1 utilized for special sizes (photos and envelopes) and tray #2 for standard 8.5X11paper.  I have the default to tray #2 and locked tray#1in my settings (tray #1 on top, tray # 2 on bottom). However when I send a print job for normal letter size, it trys to send the job to utilize tray #1. I can bypass this by switching trays but that is a real pain and much slower. I've checked and all software and firmware is up-to-date. Hopefully someone has a solution for this issue.

Hi @Desertboy,

Thank you for joining the HP Forums!

I saw your post on how your HP Officejet pro 8600 printer is not pulling from the correct tray. I am happy to help you with this issue!

Follow these steps to change the default print settings for all print jobs from the Windows 8 Desktop.

  1. Right-click or touch and hold the bottom left side of the screen to open the menu. From the menu, click or tap Control Panel, and then click or tap View devices and printers.

  2. Right-click or touch and hold the printer icon () for your printer, and then click or tap Printing preferences.

  3. Select your new default print settings, and then click or tap OK.

I would use these settings to set the default to tray 2 for regular paper. Then if you want to print to tray 1, you can change the settings manually. Or, you can add the same printer again in the control panel, devices and printers, and set it's default settings to tray 1 for specialty paper, and rename it to 8600 (tray 1) as an example.
