Hi Guys
I have searched the forums but wasn't able to find this exact problems but many similar so I'm hoping you can help as this community seems pretty helpful.
I bought a HP ENVY 7640 printer around Christmas time. I have it set up and connected to my wireless network. It prints from file, prints when I send a document to the printer's email address, scans, copies, etc.
However I am not able to print to the printer from my laptop if the laptop is not connected via USB cable.
The printer shows up in my list of devices, and it is identified as a HP ENVY, however it says that the driver is unavailable.
When I go to device manager, it shows up as Unknown Device.
When I try to install the driver from device manager, it locates a driver, but then encounters an error when attempting to install it.
I'm really not sure what else to do. I bought this printer so I could print wirelessly and it seems like I am stuck right now with wired printing.
Has anyone seen something like this before?
Thanks

Hi,
Apologies for jumping in @banhien, I would like to add some further suggestions which may help resolving the problem.
@dananielsen- Please right click the Ethernet / Wifi icon of your PC and select Open Network or Sharing Center (located at the system tray as shown below):
Ensure the network type is shown as Private Network, if it is listed as Public Network press 'Network and Internet' at the top bar, select Homegroup, press the Change Location button and select Yes.
Now return the Network or Sharing Center and press 'Change Advanced sharing settings'
Ensure that Network Discovery is enabled, the checkmark below to Auto install network devices is Unchecked and File and printer sharing is Enabled.
Go back to Devices and Printers, remove any existing reminder of the printer by right clickig it and selecteing Remove Device.
Open the Device Manager and remove any reminder of your printer, as well as any Unknown Device.
Restart your PC, open the HP Envy software and follow the steps to connect a new printer.
If the same persists press Start > Settings ( the gear icon) > Update and Security and follow the steps to install any available Win10 update.
Repeat the same till there are no more updates available and try connectign a new printer again.
Please let me know how it goes,
Shlomi

Hi,
Sounds like you have not installed the printer software and drivers to your computer. At this stage you can use Direct printing. Please use the CD which came with printer or download the following package and install to your computer
http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib/software13/printers/en7640/EN7640__Full_WebPack_1107.exe
Please select Wireless, it will show your printer and accept it then follow on screen instructions.
At the end, you may see TWO logical printers for same physical printer in Devices and Printers screen, the first one uses your wireless router and the second one for direct printing. You can choose one as default but m recommendation is : use network printer as default.
Regards.

Hello banhien thank you for the response.
I tried installing drivers using the link you provided and selected the Wireless connection, but it failed again. Please see below for screenshots. The frustrating thing is that it does not give a reason for the failure only that it was unable to be installed over the network.
I have also taken a photo of the screen on the printer to show that it is connected to my network:

Hi,
Do you know what is the IP address of your router. It should be 192.168.1.0 or 192.168.1.1.
Regards.

Hi,
A bit strange but still ok. Please downlod and run the following tool
http://ftp.hp.com/pub/printers/hppsdr/HPPSdr.exe
It may fix the problem for you. If not, post back full error message(s).
Regards.
Note: I will be offline for few hours

Hi banhien,
So I ran the tool. It identified the printer, seemed to communicate with it then said that the full software solution was not installed.
So I clicked install software, and I think it downloaded the same thing that you linked me to before.
Once it was done downloading it extracted the software but then just went to the "Thank You" screen. It didn't show an error log and I'm not sure where to find one.
Something that was quite odd though, was that when I ran the tool again, it did the same thing. i.e. it did not detect the software on my computer again.

Hi,
May be Windows 10 is the culprit. Now please right click the downloaded file (EN7640__Full_WebPack_1107.exe) and run as Administrator.
Regards.

Holy moly OK so I did a combination of the two pieces of advice from ShlomiL and banhien.
First I tried running the HP setup as administrator but that did not work and had the same result of unsuccessful network installation.
So then I removed the printer from Devices and Printers and made sure it was gone from Device Manager as well. I then restarted the computer and re-ran the HP setup, but as administrator.
THIS TIME it actually installed.
I was able to print a test page, and the computer is actually able to see the printer on the network now with drivers all installed properly!
I'm still having an issue with registering the printer but at this point I'll take the wireless printing since I don't know what the benefits are to registering anyways.
Thanks so much for the help guys and sorry for taking time to respond these past couple of days.
