Thank you for posting in the HP community. A good day to you. I will be glad to assist you here. Excellent commitment and great diagnosis of the issue. Kudos to you for that.
- Did you change the router or ISP?
- Did you try updating the printer's firmware with a USB cable?]
- Do other devices connect to the printer on the network like an iPad or another computer?
Let's try these steps:
- Restore network defaults on the printer from this user guide link: http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c03784120 refer to page 7 for steps on how to do it.
- Then run the wireless setup to connect to the wireless network. You could perform relevant steps from this link: https://support.hp.com/us-en/product/hp-envy-4500-e-all-in-one-printer-series/5304875/model/5368521/... (HP ENVY 4500, HP Deskjet 3540 Printers - Wireless Printer Setup (Windows)
To find the WPA password, follow directions from this link: https://support.hp.com/us-en/product/hp-envy-4500-e-all-in-one-printer-series/5304875/model/5368521/... (Find Your Wireless WEP, WPA, WPA2 Password) after selecting the correct operating system.
- Once you connect to the wireless network, then you can update the firmware from the printer's control panel on the wireless network or by using a USB cable. Please follow instructions from this link: https://support.hp.com/bg-en/document/c02919168
This should take care of it for you.
Good luck and keep me posted about the developments. If this helps, please mark this as “Accepted Solution” as it will help several others with the same issue and give the post a Kudos for my efforts to help. Thank you and have a great week ahead. 🙂

Hi David,
Thanks for the reply, however: that won't work.
I can't connect my printer to WiFi because it keeps giving an error on the WPA password, even though it is correct. I have a print-out of the error message but as that's in Dutch I don't know if it'll help. The forum topic I linked to in my original post gives a solution to that issue (updating firmware) but I can't update the firmware because I can't select my printer (while connected via USB) as was shown on the screenshot I attached when trying to update it. (I didn't change the router, this is the first time I'm trying to connect to it.)
So it seems I'm stuck =/

Update:
As it turns out the firmware was indeed the culprit. I had to do a semi-reset on the printer and when I tried to update the firmware again after that I could select my printer, update the firmware and my printer could finally connect properly to the network.
