This seems to be a known issue with this printer.  I read the same problem people were having with this issue and this same printer back in 2020.  There didn't seem to be a solution listed in the public comments.  Please help!  Am ready to give up and move to a different model.  I have made sure all of my setting for printing borderless are set to 4x6 on my computer app.  No matter what I do though, I only have 5x7 printing for photos available on my iPhone.  This is both in my print app on my phone and also in HP Smart Print on my phone.  There is no option to choose 4x6.

Welcome to the HP Community.

You can adjust the Paper Size and Type in the Embedded Web Server (EWS).

EWS can be reached from either your browser or from within HP Smart.

Reminder

Mobile Printing requires that you adjust the paper size / type before you open the content / item you are printing.

EWS - HP Smart for Mobile - iOS / iPadOS

Reminder: The EWS Tray and Paper settings must be updated before you open the object to be printed.

Open HP Smart (for mobile)

Open Settings wheel

Open Add / Set Up a Printer

Scroll down, Click, Tray and Paper

Printer Model Dependent:  Check / Adjust settings in Advanced

Click Apply to save changes

This works for a minute but then reverts back to 5x7 size paper.  I was able to print 1 photo in the 4x6 size, but the second time I used the HP Smart app or the regular Print function it went back to the 5x7 size.  Why won't it retain my preferences?  And why isn't the 4x6 size available as a selection on my iPhone?  I should be able to select this within the app and not have to go online to reselect 4x6 every time I print a picture.  And yes, I did hit the "Apply" button in EWS after making the changes.  Did HP recently do an update?

Edits - Updates

Suggestion...

If you have not done so, remove the 4x6" photo paper from the photo tray - stack - replace paper in the tray - snug but not "too tight" and pushed back but not "over the back" edge of the tray.  Close up the tray and check printer display panel / EWS to reset / adjust settings for Paper Size and Type.

Original Content

I cannot duplicate the issue.  (I have an iPad Pro running iPADOS 15.1)

?

It does seem like the paper size / type should "stick" once selected in EWS.

4x6" Photo Paper is (should be) a standard size selection for the Photo Tray.

According to the Apple Apps Store -

- The last update was:

  • 8.10.1Nov 29, 2021

    Minor enhancements and bug fixes.

Thanks for your suggestions!  At least I found the EWS and now I can go in and change it when it switches.  Do you think uninstalling and reinstalling could help?  Again, thanks for your help!

You are welcome.

If the "non-stick" is caused by the printer,

Restart of the printer might help.

If you have not done so recently, consider updating the printer Firmware

(At this writing, Firmware release date 03-Dec-2021)

HP Printers - Printer Turns Off Unexpectedly or Repeatedly

Step 2: Restart the printer

Step 3: Update the Firmware

Reference

Update the firmware on an HP printer

If you believe the root cause of the problem is within the application or the installation of the app on your phone, then Yes,

Uninstall the app from your phone >

Shut off the phone (at least close all apps)

Switch on the phone

Open the Apps Store and "get" a new copy of the HP Smart app.

What else?

If the root cause is not the printer and it is not the app itself, then take a look at your network.

Ensure the router that controls your network is updated,

The router is up-to-task (not weak or based on older tech),

Your connection to your network is strong and stable.
