HP officejet pro 9025.   Has 2 paper trays, but tray 2 seems to default to photo paper so I cannot print to it.

The settings on the printer itself says tray 2 is set up for plain a4 paper.  The settings through the "windows printer settings - properties - device settings" only allows it to be photo paper.

When printing from word, excel, etc, it will not print from tray 2 whether I select it in page setup or whether I select it via printer preferences when it comes to printing, or if I tell it both ways.

When looking at the printer preferences, it says photo paper with a yellow warning triangle and it will not select paper from tray  2

I cannot find any more settings.  how do i get it to realise tray 2 is not and will not be photo paper?

Hi @klucas1

Welcome to the HP Support Community. I'd be happy to assist you with the tray settings.

Please try these steps -

1. Make sure the printer is turned on.

2. From the printer control panel, touch or swipe down the tab at the top of the screen to open the Dashboard, and then touch (Setup).

3. Scroll and touch Tray Management.

4. Touch Tray Assignment, select Default Tray, and then select the appropriate option.

Hi Asmita

thanks for the reply, however that doesn't answer the question.  My question was not how do I change the default tray for printing, which is what your answer gets me to do.

My question was that there is some sort of confusion in the message between the printer and my PC where my PC will not allow me to print onto paper in tray 2 unless I tell the document on the PC that I want it to print to photo paper (which I don't) rather than simply plain A4.

I have altered the settings on the printer to tell the printer that the paper in tray 2 is plain a4.

Any other thoughts or anyone else?

Thanks in advance

Download and install HP Print and Scan Doctor, it is a Windows tool to fix printer issues.

If the issue still persists, try re-installing the printer driver -

1. In the search box, type and open "Uninstall a Program".

2. Look for HP Printer software.

3. Right-click to uninstall.

4. In the search box, type and open “Devices and printers”.

5. In the Devices and Printers, look for your HP printer. If you see it listed right-click on it and choose “Delete” or “Remove Device”.

6. Open the run command with the "Windows key + R" key combo.

7. Type printui.exe /s and click Ok. (Note: there is a space in between “printui.exe” and “/s”).

8. Click on the "Drivers" tab.

9. Look for HP Printer driver. If you see it Click on it and click “Remove” at the bottom.

10. Select Ok.

11. Select Apply and Ok on the Print Server Properties windows.

12. Close Devices and Printers Once the software and drivers are removed.

13. Restart the computer.

14. Download and install the software and drivers from here for Windows 10 (64-bit).

15. Click on the downloaded file and follow the on-screen instructions.

Thank you for that, that solved my tray 2 problem and I can now print from tray 2, but there is now another problem and none of your guides or print doctors seem to sort it.

When in Microsoft word, I want to be able to print on letterhead and plain paper - i.e. first page letterhead, page 2 onwards plain paper.   The letterhead and plain papers are in trays 2 and 1 respectively (given that tray 1 is the larger capacity tray.

In Microsoft Word, printing from different trays is set up via the page layout section within the 'Layout' menu.

It can be set to take the first page from a choice of trays, when selecting the HP 9020 printer these trays are given as options:

  • Default tray (Printer Auto Select)
  • Automatically Select
  • Printer Auto Select
  • Main Tray
  • Tray 2

So, when telling Word to take the first page from Tray 2 and then telling it to take other pages from any of the other choices, it pulls all pages from tray 2.   Yes, even when selecting "main tray" which is set up to be tray 1.

This is despite the settings on the printer (from your instructions in your first reply) saying that Tray 1 was the default tray.  I have even 'locked' tray 2 within the printer settings and it makes no difference at all.

I can tell that tray 1 is the default tray because if I choose default tray or automatically select for both the first and other pages then it pulls all pages from tray 1.

It seems there is still a bug in the system because all other printers I have tried allow the Microsoft Word settings to prevail and pull paper from different trays.

Any further thoughts or do I need to send this back?

Thanks
