HP Print for Chrome
Chrome OS

Which HP laser multi-function printers can be can be USB attached to a Chrmebook for printing via HP Print for Chrome?

I was able to use HP Print for Chrome to print from a Chromebook to a network-attached HP M127fw, but when I tried to print with a direct USB connection to the M127fw I received a message saying that it would not work.

I don't need the M127fw to work for this because I plan to buy an HP laser multi-function printer that can be USB-attached to the Chromebook, but I can't figure out which products I ought to be considering.

Here is the configuration that worked for me:

Acer Chromebook 14 running Chrome OS Version 69.0.3497.95 with the HP Print for Chrome extension.

HP LaserJet Pro MFP M130fw updated to firmware Version 20180510 with Release Date June 7, 2016 and configured with Wi-Fi Direct OFF, Network Wi-Fi ON, and HP ePrint OFF.

Google Nexus 5X using T-Mobile service with a hotspot providing wi-fi Internet access to the Acer Chromebook and the HP M130fw.

Printing is initiated on the Chromebook via the HP Print for Chrome extension. Before updating the HP M130fw firmware, the Chromebook did not find the HP M130fw. Other than that, the main issue I encountered is that the Chromebook sometimes does not immediately find the HP M130fw, so it is sometimes necessary to restart the Chromebook app, or even the Chromebook itself to make printing work.

Scanning is initiated on the HP M130fw using the Apps menu on the touchscreen control panel. Specifically, this uses the Google Drive app to scan and then upload a scan file to the Google Drive account being used on the Acer Chromebook.

Connecting the HP M130fw to the Acer Chromebook with a USB cable did not work because the Chromebook did not detect the HP M130fw.

I found no documentation that the HP Print for Chrome extension worked with the HP M130fw, but it worked the same as with the HP M127fw, which is documented as working.

The HP Smart app required wi-fi, so the HP Smart app did not work on the Google Nexus 5X because there was no wi-fi available other than the wi-fi provided by the Google Nexus 5X via a hotspot.

This was not the easiest configuration to get working but seems like it will be usable.
