When I pulled up HP Smart, I get a dialog box asking for a "custom" which was apparently assigned at some point. I don't have any record of a password, how can I reset this? FYI my printer is (and always has been) connected to my home wifi network, nothing changed.

I have not run across the app asking for "custom".
HP Smart does work better after having logged into the application.
I do suggest you log into the HP Smart application. If you do not have anything else (or different) that you use for HP Smart / HP Connected, try to log into the HP Smart app using the same login / ID / password that you use for the Community.

Not that password?
The other password that is applicable is perhaps the password you use to connect to your Wireless network. It is possible the connection is lost, stuck, needs-a-kick.
Check your status.

Thanks for the advice. I followed those instructions, but they did not work. What did seem to work was:
1) disabling Web Services on the printer
2) then enabling web services
3) uninstalling HP Smart
4) reinstalling HP Smart
After these steps, when selecting Scan from the HP Smart menu, worked fine, no annoying request for a password. Scan worked fine.

You are welcome.
It makes sense - the only other likely password connection would be that of the printer to the network.
Happy printing.
