Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard and older

I have a new printer HP Laserjet Pro MFP M181.  I have it connected to my wifi ok and I can print from my iPad 4 just using the standard print function.  As the latest IOS update for iPad 4 is 10.3 i am unable to install the HP Smart app which requires IOS 11.  How can I use the other functions like scan to my ipad without the HP Smart app?  Is there an equivalent app I get use to to perform such functions on IOS 10.3?

A warm welcome to HP Community!

As per this document, HP Smart App is compatible with iOS 10 or later. Go to 123.hp.com from a browser on your iPad and then try to install HP Smart app.

Let me know how it goes!

A newer version of thip app 6.1.2 requires ios 11 or newer, no matter what is written in that document. Is there any solution to use airprint with my m225 except updating ios or purchasing a new one?

You are right, HP Smart app is only compatible with iOS 11 and above. HP LaserJet Pro MFP M225dw is AirPrint compatible, you may use the steps available here to print with Apple AirPrint.
