When I try to print a 1 page document I get an error pop up that says "The printer is out of memory. Print job is cancelled." I have turned off the printer and turned off and unplugged the printer-what do I do to fix this?

Hi @Eliz18

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

Here are the steps you can follow to resolve the “Printer is out of memory. Print job is cancelled.” error on your HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M281cdw:

Check the Print Job Size

  • Large or complex documents (with heavy graphics or high-resolution images) can exceed the printer’s memory capacity.
  • Try printing a simpler version of the document (for example, reduce image resolution or print in grayscale).

Update the Printer Firmware

  • On the printer’s control panel, go to Setup > Service > LaserJet Update > Check for Updates.
  • Ensure the firmware is current, as updates often improve memory handling.

Adjust Driver Settings in Windows

  • Open Devices and Printers on your computer.
  • Right-click your printer and select Printer Properties.
  • Under the Advanced tab, change the Print Processor to “WinPrint” and set the Default Data Type to “RAW.”
  • Also, under Printing Preferences, set the print quality to a lower resolution (e.g., 600 dpi instead of 1200 dpi).

Print as Image (for PDFs)

  • If printing a PDF, open it in Adobe Acrobat Reader.
  • Go to File > Print > Advanced and select Print as Image.
  • This reduces memory demand by simplifying the data sent to the printer.

Clear Print Queue

  • Open the Print Queue from the printer icon in the taskbar.
  • Cancel all pending jobs, then try printing again.
  • Sometimes multiple jobs stuck in the queue can trigger memory errors.

Check Connection Type

  • If using wireless printing, try connecting via USB to rule out communication issues that may cause incomplete data transfer.

Power Cycle with Reset

  • Turn off the printer, unplug it for 60 seconds, then plug it back in and power on.
  • This clears temporary memory and resets the device.

By following these steps, you should be able to eliminate the memory error and print successfully.
