Hello!  I think there might be some compatibility issue between he new modem/router wifi-6 and our older printers HP 8020 which are probably capable of taking in 802.  Is this correct?  Is there a way to resolve this?

Hi @Treehouse7777,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) routers are backward compatible with older Wi-Fi standards like 802.11ac/n/g/b/a, so your HP OfficeJet Pro 8020 should theoretically be able to connect to a Wi-Fi 6 network. However, sometimes issues can arise due to differences in the configuration or specific compatibility problems.

Here are some steps to help you resolve the connectivity issue between your HP OfficeJet Pro 8020 and your new Wi-Fi 6 modem/router:

1. Check Wi-Fi Band Compatibility

  • Open a web browser and enter your router’s IP address (usually something like 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1).
  • Log in with your router's admin username and password.Navigate to the wireless settings section.
  • Ensure that the 2.4 GHz band is enabled and is broadcasting.
  • If your router has band steering (a feature that automatically switches devices between 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz), consider disabling it temporarily.

2. Set Up Printer on New Network

  • On the printer control panel, go to Setup (the gear icon).Navigate to Network Setup or Wireless Settings.
  • Select Restore Network Settings or Restore Network Defaults to clear previous settings. On the printer control panel, go to Setup (the gear icon).Navigate to Network Setup or Wireless Settings.
  • Select Wireless Setup Wizard.Follow the on-screen instructions to connect to your new Wi-Fi network. Ensure you enter the correct Wi-Fi password.

3. Update Printer Firmware

  • Go to the HP Support website.Enter your printer model and download the latest firmware update if available.
  • Follow the instructions provided to update the printer's firmware.

4. Check Router Security Settings

  • Ensure your router is using a compatible Wi-Fi security mode, such as WPA2. Some older devices may not work with WPA3.Change the security mode to WPA2-Personal if it’s set to WPA3.

5. Disable IPv6 on the Router:

  • Open a web browser and enter your router’s IP address.Navigate to the IPv6 settings and disable it. Some older devices have trouble with IPv6.

6. Assign a Static IP Address to the Printer

  • Print a Network Configuration Page from the printer’s control panel.Open a web browser and enter the printer’s IP address to access its web interface.Navigate to the network settings and assign a static IP address within the router’s DHCP range but outside the dynamic range.

7. Factory Reset Router and Printer

  • Go to the printer’s setup menu and select Reset or Restore Factory Defaults.
  • Perform a factory reset on the router by pressing the reset button (refer to the router’s manual for specific instructions).

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
