Recently my roommate got us a printer and we set it up and everything and the printer works for them but the printer will not show up on my computer or my phone. They then sent me an invitation to share the printer in hopes that would solve the issue and every time I go to log in I keep getting the same message saying that "Something unexpected happened. We're sorry, but something went wrong. Check that you have a stable Internet connection and try again. If you continue to have issues, try signing in later." So I waited a day and tried to do it again and I kept getting the same thing. I have not been having any issues with my wifi and my devices are on the same network as the printer. Please help me because I don't want to have to bug my roommate every time I need to print something. The printer that we have is the HP Envy 6100e. The printer works completely fine for my roommate but it will not work for me or show up on any of my devices

Hi @ashley714,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I know how frustrating it is when a shared printer works perfectly for one person but refuses to cooperate with your devices. Let’s walk through the most effective steps to get your HP Envy 6100e printer connected and working for you.

1. Make Sure HP Smart Is Installed and Updated

  • On your phone or computer, download or update the HP Smart app:  HP Smart

2. Accept the Printer Sharing Invitation

If your roommate sent you an invitation:

  • Make sure you’re signed in to HP Smart with the same email they used to invite you.
  • If you get the “Something unexpected happened” error:
    • Try signing in from a different device or browser.
    • Clear your browser cache or use incognito mode.
    • Ensure your HP account is verified by checking your email for any confirmation links.

3. Connect to the Same Wi-Fi Network

Even if your devices are on the same network:

  • Restart your phone/computer and the printer.
  • Make sure your device is not on a guest network or VPN, which can block local discovery.

4. Add the Printer Manually

If the invitation fails:

  • Open HP Smart → Tap Add Printer
  • If it doesn’t show up, tap Set Up a New Printer
  • Follow the steps to connect via Wi-Fi (you may need your roommate’s help to press the Wi-Fi button on the printer)

5. Use HP Smart Cloud Printing

If local discovery fails, you can print via the cloud:

  • Sign in to HP Smart with your HP account
  • Ask your roommate to share the printer via HP Smart Cloud
  • You’ll be able to print from anywhere once it’s linked

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
