Microsoft Windows 11

For several months now my laptop will not print in colour.  If I try and change the setting to 'color' it says another setting is preventing it.  I cannot figure out which setting is preventing it.  I am able to print in colour from my iPhone or iPad, so resort to that option, but I would like to get it sorted some day!

Hi @Duzibergs ,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand there may be a setting on your laptop that's preventing color printing from the HP ENVY 4527, despite being able to print in color from your iPhone or iPad. Let's troubleshoot the issue:

1. Check Printer Driver Settings:

  • Open Control Panel and go to Devices and Printers.
  • Right-click on your HP ENVY 4527 printer and select Printer Properties.
  • Under the Color tab, ensure that color printing is enabled. Sometimes, the printer driver can have a default setting that forces printing in grayscale or black-and-white.
  • If there’s an option for Print in Grayscale, uncheck it.

2. Check the Print Settings in the Application:

  • When printing from your laptop, ensure that the application (Word, PDF viewer, etc.) is not set to print in grayscale. In the print dialog, you should be able to select Color under the print preferences.
  • Sometimes, there’s a "quality" or "color" dropdown that needs to be adjusted in the print settings of the document.

3. Printer Preferences in the Windows Printer Menu:

  • Go to Settings > Devices > Printers & Scanners.
  • Select the HP ENVY 4527 and click Manage > Printer Properties.
  • Look for any color-related settings under the Advanced or Preferences tab, and ensure that Color is selected. Disable any settings that may force black-and-white printing, like "Print in grayscale."

4. Update Printer Driver:

  • Sometimes, outdated drivers can cause issues with print settings. You can try updating the printer driver:
    • Go to Device Manager (right-click on Start and select Device Manager).
    • Find Printers, right-click on your HP ENVY 4527, and select Update Driver.
    • Alternatively, you can go to HP’s official website and download the latest driver for your printer model.

5. HP Print and Scan Doctor: HP Print and Scan Doctor

  • Download and run the HP Print and Scan Doctor tool. It can detect and fix many printing-related issues, including color printing problems.
  • Download HP Print and Scan Doctor here.

6. Check for Software Conflicts:

  • Certain third-party software or even specific settings in Windows can prevent color printing. Make sure any background apps are not interfering with printing.
  • Try printing in color with other applications (e.g., Microsoft Word, Adobe Acrobat) to see if it’s a specific app causing the issue.

7. Clear the Printer Queue:

  • Sometimes, stuck jobs in the print queue can cause issues with settings not applying properly.
  • Go to Control Panel > Devices and Printers, select your HP printer, and open the print queue. Clear any pending print jobs and restart the printer.

Thank you for your detailed response.  Unfortunately despite trying what you say, and also having an online session with an agent this problem is still not solved.  The issue seems to be that there is no option for colour anywhere in any of the settings you describe - I’ve tried the HpSmart app, the settings in control panel, and online.  There is just no option to change colour choices.  I tried removing the black and white cartridge and it still printed in greyscale.  Every test page I have printed has come out in greyscale.  The one time I managed to get colour out of it was when I did the ‘cleaning printhead’ procedure and the sheet it printed out then had colour on it.  However, all subsequent attempts just came out in black and white again.  The printer prints in colour with no issues from my iPhone and iPad.  I cannot believe there isn’t a setting somewhere that I can access!!
